Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Advocacy & Programming will play a pivotal role in advancing AJC’s mission by overseeing and driving our advocacy and programming efforts. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of antisemitism, Israel, and international issues, demonstrating the ability to effectively communicate and educate diverse audiences on these topics. In addition to content expertise, the candidate should be adept at managing projects, events, and programming initiatives, ensuring they align with our organizational goals.  The candidate should be a “self-starter”, able to recognize and implement opportunities for action.

The Assistant Director of Advocacy & Programming’s portfolio will include legislative and educational advocacy initiatives. This person will cultivate and manage relationships with Bay Area elected officials as well as K-12 school administrators.  The Assistant Director will monitor educational policies and practices as they impact the Jewish community,  inspire and train volunteers, empowering them to be stronger community advocates, and mobilize parents and students to counter antisemitism and other issues of concern in schools. The Assistant Director will also work with elected officials at the local, state, and federal level to advance the AJC’s legislative priorities. Who You Are/What You Have

  • Prior work experience with California elected officials, legislative advocacy, and/or K-12 teaching is strongly preferred.
  • A highly organized implementer 
  • An attuned communicator with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A skilled public speaker
  • A team player
  • A proven ability to identify opportunities and starting points for action, as well as to follow through to meet goals
  • Excellent people skills, including active listening and the ability to “read a room” 
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Aligned with AJC’s mission and diplomatic style, with knowledge and passion for the organization’s key issues (Israel, world Jewry, human rights, international relations, foreign policy, and democratic institutions)
  • Adept at time management with the ability to manage several projects at one time
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends and to travel occasionally       
  • A bachelor's degree and 4-6 years of professional experience

Job Responsibilities 

Content and Public Speaking: 

Speak and educate diverse audiences on antisemitism, Israel, and international issues.

  • Stay updated on relevant developments and trends to ensure accurate and current content delivery.

Educational Advocacy

  • Develop and nurture relationships with school administrators, parent groups, and K-12 students.
  • Organize training and initiatives to empower Jewish parents and students and to counter antisemitism in schools.

Legislative Advocacy:

  • Build and maintain relationships with elected officials at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Staff AJC’s Public Policy Committee and facilitate regular committee meetings.
  • Collaborate with local and national colleagues to develop and implement strategies on legislative issues related to the Jewish community.

Manage Projects:

  • Plan, organize, and execute diverse programming initiatives.
  • Oversee the coordination of events, ensuring smooth execution of project timelines.
  • Other tasks and team projects tasks as assigned by the Regional Director

What You’ll Do / A Day in the Life 

Please note that this is a small sample of activities that the Assistant Director may perform; each day will vary.

  • Meet with an elected official to discuss antisemitism-related legislation 
  • Speak to students, parents and administrators about antisemitism and Israel issues as they manifest in educational settings.
  • Work with lay leaders (volunteers) to plan and implement trainings for parents and teens.

The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $85,000, depending on relevant experience.
