Oseh Shalom, a Reconstructionist Congregation located in Laurel, Maryland, is seeking a salaried, part-time cantor/shaliach tsibur to join our religious community. In collaboration with our rabbis, lay leaders, and other professional staff, you will be co-creating prayer, musical, and davening experiences that encourage congregational participation and offering creative musical experiences that enrich and enhance Oseh Shalom’s Shabbat, High Holy Days, Festival, and lifecycle services.

rabbis are a married team that shares the rabbinical role. Congregational singing and active participation during services are some of Oseh Shalom’s hallmarks.
Specific Position Responsibilities:
As our part-time cantor/musical shaliach tsibur, your responsibilities will
include:
- Leading or co-leading an average of 3 Erev Shabbat and one Shabbat morning services per month
- Leading or co-leading all major High Holy Day and Festival services
- Officiating or co-officiating at life cycle events held at Oseh Shalom
- Actively engaging with our Religious School students and families and serving as a resource to the Religious School Director and staff
- Teaching at our Religious School with the number of hours to be negotiated
- Providing guidance to B’nei Mitzvah students and their families in collaboration with the rabbis and Religious School Director
- Preparing B’nei mitzvah students for their B’nei mitzvah service
- Encouraging and fostering congregational participation in services and supporting congregants in developing their singing and davening abilities
- Pursuing ongoing professional development with congregational support
Qualifications:
The successful candidate for this position will:
- Be musically knowledgeable, and will have a background in Jewish music whether it is contemporary, traditional or folk style
- Demonstrate competency in leading services using the guitar (strongly preferred) or other accompanying musical instrument
- Demonstrate competence with davening, the presentation of liturgy, and the Judaic and the Jewish musical knowledge necessary to cultivate Jewish spiritual life through music and song with a Reconstructionist congregation
- Have good Hebrew reading skills and knowledge of nusach
- Be comfortable using and teaching Reconstructionist liturgy with its liturgical traditions (e.g. Kiddush, Aleynu, Torah Blessings, Amidah, )
- Have the ability to read or chant Torah and Haftarah
The ability to direct a congregational choir is a strong plus as is the ability to lead a congregational “ruach band”
Compensation:
This is a part-time, salaried position. Compensation package is in the $45- 50K range commensurate with experience and agreed-upon specifics of responsibilities.
