Description

Congregation Beth Israel is a warm, inclusive and vibrant Reconstructionist synagogue in Media, Pennsylvania, with longtime roots in Delaware County. We are a growing community of approximately 160 families and a small, yet engaged, Hebrew School population from Pre-K through B’nai Mitzvah.

We seek a new Education Director to fill the part-time role that will open July 1, 2025. We are blessed to have a part-time Senior Rabbi and a part-time Associate Rabbi, both of whom are deeply involved in the planning and management of our Hebrew School. The Education Director will work closely with one of our rabbis to lead the Hebrew School, and will receive support from our parents via the Education Committee.

The focus of this position is threefold: Directing and helping to nurture a meaningful and dynamic Hebrew School for our 30+ students, periodically engaging our teens in learning and service, and supporting additional youth and family engagement programming at the synagogue.

This position requires on-site work on Sunday mornings and during other Hebrew School programming, but some work can be done remotely. Some of the primary responsibilities are:

  • Executing and improving on our existing curriculum focused on Judaism, Jewish culture, and Hebrew decoding and prayer skills.
  • Supervising, supporting and mentoring two to four teachers.
  • Hiring new teachers, as necessary, to work in the Hebrew School.
  • Supervising the Sunday morning weekly Hebrew School session in person, along with three to four Saturday morning Shabbat programs. (~25 sessions/year total)
  • Cultivating and maintaining relationships with students, parents and the wider Beth Israel community.
  • Managing documentation and records, as well as materials and supplies, in an organized manner.
  • Creating a short weekly newsletter for Hebrew School families and well as periodic write-ups for our synagogue newsletter.
  • Organizing a monthly gathering for our teens focused around learning, service, and building community.
  • Supporting youth and family programs that would periodically occur (sometimes on Friday evenings)

The annual salary for this position is up to $25,000. With continued growth of our Hebrew School and of our youth and family members, there is a possibility for more growth in salary and scope. Preference will be given to candidates seeking a multi-year commitment.

Interested candidates please contact Marissa Band, Chair of our Search Committee, [email protected]. Please email her your current resume, a brief letter of introduction, and two references.  The position will be
