Hebrew School Music Educator

How do we help children bring Judaism to life for themselves? This is the question that motivates our youth learning at Kerem Shalom, a progressive Jewish community in Concord, Massachusetts, and we seek educators who want to join us in working with children this way.

For many years, music has been a beloved element of Kerem Shalom’s educational experiences—something students look back on with deep appreciation and excitement, even years after they’ve grown into teens and adults. Even as we’ve reimagined our Hebrew School curriculum in recent years (creating an experiential, elective-based program), we’ve kept music at the heart of our learning: using it to build community, teach prayer, and bring Torah and holidays to life. We seek now to bring a new Music Educator into this holy work.

The Music Educator is part of a supportive, professional Hebrew School faculty and is supervised by Kerem Shalom’s Director of Congregational Learning. Previous experience working with children, especially those with diverse learning needs, is a preferred qualification––as is a repertoire of contemporary Jewish children’s music. We look forward to meeting candidates who are inspired by children and are excited about bringing Judaism to life in engaging and creative ways.

Responsibilities:

  • Music and prayer leadership during Hebrew School:
    • Co-lead, with the Director of Congregational Learning, 15-minute opening gathering
    • Plan and lead two, 20-minute music education lessons: one for grades 1-2 and one for grades 5-6
    • Co-lead, with Director of Congregational Learning, 25-minute prayer service for grades 3-6
    • Plus other opportunities for music education, to be established collaboratively with the Director of Congregational Learning (such as an experiential elective for grades 3-6)
  • Communicate with students’ parents/guardians as needed.
  • Potential opportunities to lead other community music programs (such as monthly Tot Shabbat and grade-level Shabbat services)

Time Commitment:

  • School Year 2024-25
  • Mondays, 4:15-6:15pm
  • 24 class sessions (September through May), plus two faculty inservice meetings
  • Classes meet in person at Kerem Shalom (659 Elm St., Concord)

Compensation: $50-80/hr, commensurate with experience

  • For college students: up to $50/session transportation reimbursement if needed

Submit resumes and questions to Kerem Shalom’s Director of Congregational Learning ([email protected]).
