Job Title: Executive Director

Location: Franklin Lakes, New Jersey

Job Type: Full Time; primarily in-person with some remote-work flexibility

Reports To: President of Board of Trustees; working in close partnership with the Senior Rabbi

Salary Range: $100,000 to $120,000, commensurate with experience

We are a vibrant and growing Jewish community for over 500 families, with more than 350 students, aged 18 months to 18 years, in our school programs. Position Overview:

Barnert is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to serve as our Executive Director. The ideal candidate will be passionate about community engagement and possess strong organizational and managerial skills. As a congregational leader, the Executive Director will embody Barnert's values and regularly interact with members, Temple employees and community members.

Ideal Candidate:

The Executive Director for Barnert Temple must be highly organized and self-motivated, overseeing the synagogue’s operations ranging from membership to facilities and finances. They will have a strong attention to detail and hold themselves accountable at all times. As a manager, they should be adept at not only directing staff but also nurturing staff development and fostering a culture of growth and learning. A diplomatic and transparent approach is necessary, as they may need to mediate between different interests within the community. It is essential for the Executive Director to partner with Barnert’s Rabbis and lay leadership, ensuring that the Temple operates in a way that aligns with its spiritual goals.

Their intellectual curiosity should drive them to seek knowledge and growth in all aspects of their role, which they should be willing to pursue through training. They must have experience managing budgets, forecasting, and planning to ensure responsible spending. They need to demonstrate excellent judgment, listening and communication skills, and be able to handle confidential matters with discretion. They must be committed to building relationships and establishing trust across the community.

The role demands a progressive mindset, with the willingness to experiment and delegate responsibilities effectively. Evaluation and data-driven decision-making are also part of their remit, ensuring that the synagogue’s resources are utilized efficiently. Professionalism is a cornerstone of their character, avoiding gossip and maintaining a high standard of conduct.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and Administration:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the synagogue, including staffing, financial management, and facility/technology maintenance.
  1. Financial Management:
  • Ensure the financial health of the Temple through responsible fiscal management
  • Develop and manage the annual budget in collaboration with the Finance Committee.
  • Provide regular financial updates, insights and reports to Barnert’s leadership.
  1. Community Engagement:
  • Foster a sense of community and inclusivity among members and find ways to build increased support for volunteer efforts
  • Work closely with Barnert’s Rabbis, volunteers, and staff to organize and promote events that enhance the spiritual and social life of the community.
  1. Communication and Outreach:
  • Enhance communication within the congregation and with the broader community through digital and traditional channels.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ability to partner, collaborate and build relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Experience in leadership, ideally within non-profit organizations, including management of staff.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
  • Ability to oversee the operations and maintenance of the physical plant and the Temple’s technology systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, advanced degree in relevant field a plus.
