Beth Israel Congregation seeks a dynamic Director of Beth Israel Religious School. This is a 65% position--approximately 25 hours per week. The Director will be responsible for the administration and management of Beth Israel's Religious School (BIRS), serving Grades pre-K-8. We value passion, imagination, and initiative about Jewish learning and working with children and families.

As a mid-sized egalitarian Conservative synagogue, Beth Israel affirms inclusion and engagement in Judaism through active participation in meaningful worship, the study of Torah, and tikkun olam ("repair of the world") in our community. Now in its 108th year, Beth Israel's mission is to connect people to Torah, to one another, and to the world through Jewish practices, texts, and activities, balancing tradition and innovation.

Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • M.A. or equivalent in Jewish education, general education, or other related field
  • Understanding of and experience with pedagogical and curricular practices, including specific practices in Jewish education
  • Experience with providing professional supervision and support of teachers
  • Working knowledge of Hebrew prayers and language (written and spoken), biblical texts
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity with respect to children's and family identities (gender identities, sexual orientation, what constitutes "family," race, geography, class)
  • Clear and responsive interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Commitment to engaging prospective and current BIRS families and members

Preferred Experience

  • Expertise in child development
  • Firm grounding in Conservative Judaism and diverse Jewish life cycle traditions
  • Knowledge of current trends in Jewish supplemental education and experiential curricula that enable meaningful and joyful learning and spiritual expression
  • Classroom teaching experience in Jewish and/or secular education settings
  • Commitment to developing creative vision for out-of-the-box opportunities (e.g., summer programming, project learning, partnership with other schools)
  • Experience with the use of creative arts and media in education and programming
  • Experience with design and delivery of creative Jewish family education

Core Responsibilities

  • Select innovative curriculum and coordinate alignment across pre-K-8th grade
  • Oversee assessment and reporting of student progress by individual and grade
  • Design and support implementation of novel project-based learning opportunities
  • Provide regular and responsive home-school communication
  • Manage school records, budget, and an accessible calendar of events
  • Ensure appropriate teacher training, supervision, and professional development
  • Collaborate with congregation's rabbi, staff, members, and volunteers
  • Promote Beth Israel's pre-school, religious school, and family programs
  • Establish connections with local educators, organizations to inform our school's program with imaginative and strong programs, materials, and learning opportunities in the national Jewish landscape

Compensation and Benefits

Start Date: July 1, 2024

Salary: Starting at $55,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience
