Position Overview
MDSC seeks a dynamic and highly organized Executive Director/Administrator to oversee the day-to-day operations and support the religious, educational, and communal life of the synagogue. This individual will serve as a central leader, working in partnership with the Rabbi, Board, staff, and congregants to foster a warm, vibrant, and well-run community.
This multifaceted role requires exceptional administrative, financial, and interpersonal skills and a strong commitment to Jewish communal life.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Administration
- Oversee all synagogue operations and office systems.
- Manage the synagogue calendar, website, communications, and vendor relations.
- Implement policies set by the Board and coordinate daily functions with clergy, staff, and lay leadership.
- Maintain building logistics, supplies, and routine maintenance.
Community Engagement
- Serve as the primary contact for members and visitors, creating a welcoming environment.
- Support member recruitment, onboarding, and engagement initiatives.
- Facilitate volunteer coordination and committee involvement.
- Maintain strong relationships with tenants and manage rental activity.
Event & Program Support
- Coordinate logistics for services, events, and community programs.
- Ensure timely communication, setup, and materials preparation.
- Oversee event publicity (emails, flyers, website updates).
Financial & Administrative Oversight
- Manage synagogue financial records using ShulCloud (or similar).
- Process deposits, track receivables/payables, and support budgeting with the Treasurer.
- Support fundraising efforts and long-term financial planning.
Facilities & Security
- Oversee facility upkeep, repairs, and security.
- Liaise with vendors and subtenants, ensuring safety and building standards are maintained.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; minimum 5 years in administration, operations, or nonprofit management.
- Experience in a synagogue or Jewish communal setting strongly preferred.
Skills & Attributes
- Warm, professional, and approachable demeanor.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, ShulCloud (or similar), and web/email platforms.
- Familiarity with Jewish customs and synagogue life a plus.
- Availability for some evenings, Shabbatot, and holidays.
