ABOUT NEFESH

Nefesh is a transdenominational Jewish spiritual community in the multicultural east side of Los Angeles. We welcome all the identities that make up who you are and who you love. We are an open doorway to the wisdom, ritual, and melodies of the Jewish tradition. A place to find and be found, whether it is for a meaningful Jewish experience or an ongoing commitment to a spiritual home. Nefesh is a new model of kiruv (outreach) and community building for urban Jewish renewal located in the ancestral homeland of the Tongva people.

We bring the margins of Jewish life to the center by engaging in active outreach, radical inclusion, and building a diverse intergenerational community. We create a welcoming, inclusive, open-hearted Jewish community that specifically seeks out and draws in those who are seeking, and have not found, a spiritual and communal connection to Judaism. We are filled with music and movement, ecstatic and contemplative. We bring the breadth of expansive inclusion and the depth of the prayers, rituals, texts, stories, creativity, and customs of the Jewish people.

Nefesh is a community driven by the middot, our deepest Jewish values. We center the intersection between personal growth and systemic change. In Nefesh we hold four realms at once: personal growth and change, relational connection and growth, community support and growth, and the work of change and transformation in the world around us. Self, other, community, and world. We hold all four and do so grounded in Mussar - a Jewish wisdom perspective and a discipline of spiritual practices focused on the middot - and social justice.

OPPORTUNITY

Nefesh became an independent spiritual community in 2019 and has experienced rapid growth in its first six years. Nefesh is seeking a full-time strategic and visionary Marketing & Communications Director to refine, articulate, and amplify the story of Nefesh across all platforms. The role is critical to strategically sustaining our unique kiruv model of outreach. This pivotal role will develop and execute multi-channel marketing strategies that grow Nefesh’s brand presence, drive community participation and deepen relationships, and share our impact story with a rapidly expanding audience, including congregants, donors, partners, and the broader community. This is an opportunity to elevate Nefesh’s influence as a model for Jewish communal transformation while strategically sustaining the kiruv model that makes such transformation possible.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Communications & Messaging

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy aligned with Nefesh’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Craft compelling narratives that reflect the diversity, spiritual depth, and radical accessibility of the Nefesh community.
  • Ensure consistent, impact and values-driven messaging across all public-facing materials, campaigns, and events.
  • Support crisis communications and sensitive issues, ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination.
  • Collaborate with clergy, program leadership, administrative personnel, and external partners to align messaging with organizational priorities.

Digital Marketing & Content Creation

  • Lead and manage the creation of engaging content (email, web, social, video, print) that reflects the rhythm of Jewish life at Nefesh — from Shabbat and holidays to learning and justice work.
    • Design and implement multi-channel campaigns for program recruitment, fundraising initiatives, and general awareness.
    • Create bold, dynamic content for social media channels (Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn).
    • Produce digital assets including creative prompts, email journeys, and marketing materials.
    • Organize, archive, maintain, and leverage existing and new content assets to elevate (and monetize) the teachings and offerings of the founding rabbi and musicians.
    • Oversee the communications calendar and lead regular coordination meetings.
    • Develop strategy for and produce weekly newsletters that effectively balance organizational priorities.
  • Oversee design and branding to ensure visual consistency and resonance with the east side's diverse aesthetic and cultural sensibilities.
  • Manage and/or implement website updates, SEO/SEM strategies, and digital analytics to drive data-informed decisions

Community Engagement & Kiruv

  • Partner with programming and clergy teams to promote events, services, and classes in ways that invite broad and inclusive participation.
  • Strategically expand awareness of Nefesh’s offerings across east side neighborhoods and digital networks.
  • Collaborate with all staff to support relationship-based kiruv and growth.

Media Relations & Thought Leadership

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries, press releases, and public statements.
  • Amplify Nefesh’s voice in the broader Jewish communal landscape — pitching stories, publishing op-eds, lifting up community voices, and elevating the thought leadership of clergy.
  • Work with leadership to craft compelling reports, impact statements, and messaging for funders and partners.
  • Enhance brand visibility through strategic partnerships, sponsorships, and community outreach initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in marketing, communications, or brand strategy, preferably in a nonprofit, spiritual, cultural, or social justice setting, with demonstrated success at multi-channel campaign management.
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills across a variety of platforms and audiences.
  • Previous experience working with a racial justice and gender equity lens.
  • Experience managing digital communications, including email marketing platforms (Mailchimp, e.g.), social media strategy (Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube) including paid advertising, CMS tools (Divi, WordPress, e.g.), and SEO/SEM.
  • Familiarity with Jewish communal life and/or an openness to learn and engage with Jewish tradition in a progressive and inclusive context.
  • Experience with media relations and public speaking.
  • Passion for Nefesh’s mission and vision for Jewish and interfaith communal life

Preferred:

  • Graphic design and/or video editing skills.
  • Experience with data analysis and impact storytelling for fundraising or stakeholder reports.
  • Experience with CRMs and/or online learning platforms.
  • Demonstrated comfort and proficiency with using AI tools for marketing tasks with a commitment to ethical and strategic application.
  • A nuanced understanding of marginalized Jewish identities, experiences, and perspectives as well as how they intersect.

Desired Qualities:

  • Strategic thinker with strong project management and leadership skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity with a drive to problem solve
  • Effective time management skills and the ability to work well under pressure
  • Excellent organizational, multitasking and prioritization skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated initiative and resourcefulness
