Youth Advisor Job Description

Role Title:       Youth Advisor for SHMoFTY (9th-12th) & JiFTY (6th-8th)

Reports to:     Heather Rosenthal, Director of Youth Education

Core Experiences and Activities

  • JiFTY/SHMoFTY Advisor: Begin to lead and work with the JiFTY (6-8th grade) youth group and the SHMoFTY (9-12th grade) youth groups within our organization.
    • SHMoFTY Advisor: Work as a mentor and guide to the SHMoFTY Youth Group Board, which consists of 8-9 members. This is an opportunity to mentor these students in understanding leadership roles and effective management of events.
    • JiFTY Advisor: Work to establish a JiFTY committee of dedicated students who might help in planning the events. For this youth group, the planning and implementation of events is predominantly your responsibility.
  • Committed Member of the Religious School Staff: We want you to be a part of our kehillah (community) not only as a teacher, but as a leader.
    • Opportunities for leading Professional Development: Through a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation Orange County, we now have the opportunity to provide growth opportunities for part-time supplemental teachers in Orange County. The hope is that you can lead and teach a session(s) throughout the year.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leading Youth Groups
    • Supervising and leading your SHMoFTY board members
    • Creating and leading professional learning experiences for youth groups
    • Working collaboratively with members of your team
    • Giving and receiving praise, feedback and guidance
  • Visionary Leadership and Organizational Development
    • Bringing innovation to the Ed team
    • Understand and integrating into the culture of SHM and our Religious School
    • Being an integral part in our Ed Team meetings
    • Understanding the political dynamics and power structures of our organization
    • Communicating effectively with our constituents through Parent Square, emails and monthly newsletter
  • Administration and Management
    • Responsibility of implementing your programs for the year
    • Prepare and be ready to respond to the crisis and management
    • Participating in calendaring and budgeting for the upcoming year
    • Being fiscally responsible for your spending on your budget line(s) for youth groups and Madrichim
  • Development
    • Work towards an open and honest relationship with your SHMoFTY Board members and all those that you closely work within the Ed Team
    • Building a relationship with the different clergy members of Shir Ha-Ma’alot and be open to receiving feedback
    • Develop relationships within our staff, families and congregants that make you feel a part of our kehillah (community)
    • Developing your role in Jewish education as a sacred act. Understanding that the setting in which your work will be done is sacred and therefore, the message should be from a place of tradition and how we can use these traditions to bring meaning to our lives today.
  • Part-Time Status
    • This role would be working 10-15 hours per week and it is an hourly rate.
