We are committed to honoring tradition while re-imagining and innovating our practices and programs to create a vibrant, contemporary, and relevant Jewish life for all who are seeking it. 

 

Our community is led by Rabbi Rolando Matalon, together with a senior leadership team that comprises Rabbi Felicia Sol, who oversees all programs, and Executive Director/COO Colin Weil, who oversees advancement, communications, finance and administration, and operations. BJ has a staff of approximately 50 full-time and 10 part-time employees. 

 

Our pivot to all-virtual programming during the COVID-19 pandemic expanded our reach substantially to thousands of additional individuals and families from around the country and beyond, who now regularly join us for prayer and learning. Our post-pandemic vision includes a dynamic hybrid operation where most of our offerings are available in person in our historic Upper West Side campus, as well as through various online platforms. Additionally, we are building a robust library of on-demand content for our community. 

Job Overview

BJ is hiring its first in-house HR Director (HRD), who will lead the human resources function, design and develop our HR practices including recruitment, retention, and professional development, and manage objectives that are qualitative and quantitative. 

 

Reporting to the executive director, the HRD will initially work alongside the CFO and the interim HR team to settle into this new role and new function, and to determine the additional staffing that will be needed to deliver excellent personnel support and payroll and benefits administration. The HRD will also work closely with the executive director and senior rabbis in developing the BJ culture. 

 

Importantly, the HRD will help imagine and build an employee-oriented, high-performance culture that emphasizes empowerment, accountability, transparency, excellence, equity, and respect. The HRD will join the Senior Staff to provide insight on all HR matters as related to our diverse staff. They will also develop and maintain excellent internal communications between the HR function and the staff, and lead ongoing efforts to assess and finesse the employee experience at BJ through formal and informal surveys and follow-up. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining the departmental budget. BJ enjoys excellent pro-bono HR legal guidance from a major law firm.

 

BJ offers a hybrid work environment for most roles within the organization including senior leadership, however there are certain days where all staff are expected on-campus weekly or monthly. 

 

Since BJ’s beginning, its vision and mission have been in support of a fair and just society. In 2018, BJ began its journey to make diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) a core value and translate DEI into internal policies. As the BJ staff grew in size and demographics, coupled with the injustice demonstrated repeatedly, the DEI work needed to be at the forefront of our HR practices. We are learning and re-learning that the work of DEI takes time, is iterative, and requires building upon a relational culture among the BJ staff and the BJ membership. Through this work, we recognize the opportunity inherent in welcoming and celebrating all those who join us, regardless of race, age, ethnicity, national origin, sexuality, gender, or gender expression, and the importance of building representation across different groups among staff and lay leadership. The HRD will play a pivotal role in collaborating, leading, or ensuring DEI principles are applied to the practices and policies impacting the BJ team members.  

 

You will oversee and contribute to:  

Compensation

  • Help finalize BJ’s compensation philosophy and salary banding.
  • Review and develop BJ’s pay scale and structure on a continuous basis.
  • Provide ongoing analysis of BJ's compensation practices to ensure that they are competitive, fair, and consistent with budgets; work with senior leaders on compensation decisions.
  • Work with the finance department to ensure that payroll complies with state laws and federal regulations. 

 

Performance Management Process

  • Provide support and development to supervisors on interviewing skills, employee coaching, performance management, training and development resources, and other HR topics.
  • Work with managers to develop employee promotion, recognition, and retention strategies.
  • Provide support and guidance to managers to proactively address performance issues, help develop performance improvement plans, proactively follow up on progress and offer advice on next steps with a strong lens on organizational needs.
  • Streamline the performance management process and adapt the process to B’nai Jeshurun’s culture. 

Learning and Development 

  • Ensure training resources are available and create  opportunities for learning and development.   
  • Recommend and oversee coordination of management training, which may include interviewing, hiring, terminations, promotion, performance review, and various training that promote a safe and inclusive working environment.  

 

Employee Relations

  • Lead efforts associated with important employment related practices including those related to diversity, equity and inclusion and standards of employee conduct; maintain employee handbook; and build ongoing employee communication.
  • Advise management in appropriate resolution of employee relations issues.
  • Develop strategies by identifying and researching human resources issues; contribute information, analysis, and recommendations to organization thinking and direction; establish human resources objectives in line with organizational objectives.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and programs. 

 

Talent Acquisition

  • Oversee and implement an updated talent acquisition workflow to be inclusive of BJ’s core values.
  • Design and ensure DEI practices are incorporated in the interviewing, candidate selection, and onboarding process.  

HR systems (CoAdvantage/Intranet) 

  • Oversee the effectiveness of the human resources system (HRIS) so that it meets the needs of BJ employees and the organization. 
  • Develop, communicate, and maintain a set of metrics to share with appropriate team members.  
  • In collaboration with the communications department, formulate key messaging and documents to share with the BJ team at large. 

Benefits 

  • In collaboration with the finance department, continuously review benefit offerings and make recommendations to foster BJ’s culture.   
  • Oversee timely and appropriate recordkeeping of personnel transactions such as hires, promotions, transfers, performance reviews, terminations, and benefit changes. 
  • Oversee administration of the benefits programs such as life, health, and dental insurance, retirement plans, vacation, sick leave, leave of absence, and employee assistance programs. 

Policy and Compliance

  • Spearhead collaboration with other department leads to ensure policies align with organizational goals, culture, and trends.  
  • Identify legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting human resources functions and ensure policies, procedures, and reporting are in compliance.
  • Consult legal counsel as needed to ensure that policies and evolving situations comply with federal and state law. 
  • Review and edit employee handbook annually to maintain compliance with current legislation and procedures.  
  • Lead internal investigations and prepares reporting. 
  • Oversee employee separation notices and related documentation, and exit interviews.
  • Contract outside suppliers to provide employee services, such as temporary employees, search firms, or relocation services.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in human resources, organizational development, labor relations, business, or equivalent experience.
  • 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience in human resources positions.
  • Strong computer skills required, including Google Suite, collaboration tools (Monday.com, Airtable). Familiarity with DARCI project management protocol is a plus.
  • SPHR or SHRM-SCP certification is a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of labor law and best practices, as well as recent changes and trends in employment practices.
  • At least two years of experience as a director or equivalent position demonstrating strong leadership skills and the ability to demonstrate and lead on values, initiatives, and culture of the organization.
  • Operational decision making that involves the appropriate individuals; development of the appropriate plan of action from multi-disciplinary perspectives.
  • Ability to see the “big picture” without loss of attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands and ensure the organization is spending time on what’s most important.
  • Experience in educational, non-profit, or Jewish organizations is highly valued but not required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, team-building, verbal and written communication skills, ability to write and format emails, documents, materials, and presentations.   

 

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position, with a salary range of $135,000 to $155,000. Salary will be based on experience level. BJ offers competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, sick, and holiday policies, 403b retirement plan.

 

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Physical demands include dexterity for office machine/supply operation including but not limited to computer, telephone, copy machine, and printers. Stooping, bending, and reaching for and carrying files or supplies, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.
