Job Description: Part-Time School Nurse

 

Summary

Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School is a TK through eighth grade Jewish community day school.  Since its founding in 1972, the leadership and administration at Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School has established and continues to nurture the foundation for creating a profound education for our students, providing a strong sense of community, and instilling the values of the Jewish people.

We are seeking an organized, caring and discreet Registered Nurse to provide compassionate healthcare services to our school community. The ideal candidate will administer first aid, manage student medications and health records, and collaborate with staff and parents to ensure student wellbeing in our warm, nurturing environment. You'll be joining a team that values creating a safe space where children can feel safe and supported.

Position: Part-Time School Nurse
Location: Abraham Joshua Heschel Jewish Day School
Job Type: Part-Time (2-3 days per week)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide basic medical care and first aid to students and staff.
  • Supervise and implement the School Medication Policy, administer medication of various sorts including insulin (via pump or subcutaneous), inhalers, oral and intramuscular medication in accordance with RN licensure. 
  • Maintain an accurate daily electronic health log of students by charting in the electronic health records.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to address health concerns and promote wellness.
  • Work with the current part-time nurse to collaborate and elevate health and wellness initiatives at Heschel.
  • Communicate effectively with parents regarding student health issues and concerns.
  • Serve on the first aid team and assist with the various aspects of the school's Emergency Plan; assist with first aid and emergency situations in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Participate in health education programs and initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with health regulations and school policies.
  • Perform a variety of clerical tasks such as processing, organizing, updating and maintaining student electronic health records, and input data into the school health data system. 
  • Ensure updated annual health forms are received for each student before the start of school. This includes processing annual student health forms and reviewing for approval, including immunization records and health screenings, and coordinating follow ups with parents via email and phone regarding missing information to ensure receipt of forms prior to the start of school. 
  • Maintain and update employee TB records. 
  • Coordinate and track annual CPR and first aid training for employees.
  • Maintain confidentiality of health records and health services. 
  • Ensure appropriate supplies are ordered in a timely manner and stored properly while upholding a clean, organized, and presentable office.
  • Interact with school personnel and parents with professionalism, kindness, and respect.
  • Meet with teachers, administrators and the CFO to review student's specific health issues that may impact the learning process or to provide for student's safety and well-being. 

Qualifications:

  • Valid RN license in the state of California. Minimum of an Associate's degree in Nursing; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Valid First Aid, CPR and AED Certification from the American Heart Association. School Nurse Certificate and Public Health Certificate are desirable. 
  • Flexibility to work 2-3 days per week.
  • At least three years prior experience in the relevant medical field. Experience in a school or pediatric setting is a plus, but not required.
  • Prior experience with school health records software is a plus, but not required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Google Docs, Gmail, Zoom, Chrome, and data management 
  • Keeps current and follows the most up-to-date state and local health recommendations, mandates, and administrative guidelines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping with a high degree of accuracy .  Ability to prioritize and balance various duties assigned.
  • Receptive attitude of patience and understanding toward children with an illness or injury and parents with regards to sensitive issues.
  • Uphold high standards of discretion and confidentiality.
  • Ability to understand and consistently apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. 
  • Diligent and well-organized work habits, including initiative, professional judgment, and the ability to problem-solve.
  • Practical knowledge and use of judgment in student interactions - understanding limitations and when to request assistance for behavioral and/or medical situations. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations, including students, parents, faculty, and staff.
