Accounting Manager

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Reports to: Executive Director

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Position Summary

The Accounting Manager will manage the congregation’s day to day accounting needs as well as lead the financial planning, budgeting, and fiscal management processes. This role is responsible for assuring that all Rodef Shalom Congregation’s accounting tasks are timely and accurate.  The Accounting Manager is also primarily responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive budgets that support programmatic goals while ensuring fiscal responsibility and compliance with all funding requirements. The Budget Manager will work closely with the Executive Director, department managers, and the Board of Trustees to provide strategic financial guidance and ensure the organization's long-term financial sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Accounting Task Management

  • Responsible for managing the Bookkeeper
  • Assure that all deposits, individual entries in the member management data base, member management data base coordination with QuickBook, account payables and other daily transactions are recorded timely and accurately.

Budget Development & Management

  • Assist in developing and managing the annual operating budget in collaboration with department directors and senior leadership
  • Create multi-year financial projections and strategic budget scenarios
  • Monitor budget performance and provide regular variance analysis and reporting
  • Lead the annual budget planning process, including timeline development and stakeholder coordination
  • Prepare budget modifications and amendments as needed throughout the fiscal year

Financial Analysis, Audit & Reporting

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership and board review
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses for new programs and initiatives
  • Analyze funding trends and their impact on organizational sustainability
  • Provide data-driven recommendations for resource allocation and cost management
  • Maintain financial dashboards and key performance indicators
  • As applicable, support the annual audit process working closely with the Audit Committee and external auditors to ensure a smooth and productive process

Grant & Contract Management

  • Oversee budget development for grant proposals and contract negotiations
  • Ensure compliance with funder budget requirements and restrictions
  • Monitor grant expenditures and prepare financial reports for funders
  • Coordinate with development team on budget components of funding proposals
  • Manage indirect cost rate calculations and documentation 

Organizational Coordination

  • Maintain and improve budgeting systems and processes
  • Ensure integration between budgeting and accounting systems
  • Develop and update budget policies and procedures
  • Train staff on budget processes and financial management principles
  • Oversee budget-related internal controls and compliance measures

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Be extraordinarily accessible and responsive to Rodef Shalom Congregation members
  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team
  • Support the board Finance Committee and its Chair, preparing agendas and budget presentations, pre-read materials, meeting materials, and minutes, and seeing through action items
  • Provide financial guidance to program directors and department heads
  • Collaborate with external consultants as needed
  • Supervise finance staff as applicable

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field
  • Master's degree preferred (MBA, MPA, or similar)
  • Minimum 5-7 years of budget management experience, preferably in a nonprofit or faith-based setting
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting software (QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite, or similar)
  • Experience with ShulCloud a plus
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and standards (GAAP)
  • Budget forecasting and variance analysis expertise
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills
