Job Description – Part-Time Religious School Director

Instructional Leadership

  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate all staff responsible for the provision of educational programming.

  • Work in collaboration with the Rabbi, other staff, and the Religious School Commttee to ensure effective instructional programing, and instruction for all aspects of educational activities. (All matters pertaining to Judaic studies are the sole prerogative of the Rabbi.)

  • Provide or arrange for professional development for the teaching staff.

  • Provide ongoing support to teachers through thoughful feedback and assistance in goal

    settng, and instructional lesson planning catered to the strengths of each teacher and the

    needs of the students.

  • Recruit and supervise madrichim/student aides.

  • Attend and assist with school-wide programing including Shabbat and other holiday

    events.

  • Develop, implement and support a supplemental mid-week program to enhance the

    learning and fluency in reading/speaking of Hebrew prayers.

  • Assist in supporting a variety of programming related to engaging young families and

    children in Synagogue life.

  • Administration

  • In cooperation with the Temple Treasurer, consult in the development and implementation of the Religious School budget.

  • Attend the monthly Temple Board of Trustees meetng, as well as the weekly Senior Staff Meetng.

  • Work with and engage volunteers in any way necessary to benefit the school community.

  • Effectively manage the operating budget of the Religious School.
  • Communication

  • Communicate and coordinate with families regarding school programing, parental involvement, and education using such tools as the Temple Happenings, email, social media, and regular mail as needed.

  • Communicate on a regular basis with families regarding student progress.

  • Increase our presence in the Greater Jewish Community through participation at special

    events as well as a variety of social media.

  • Participate with other Jewish professionals in community and professional meetngs.

 

Personal Characteristics and Qualifications

  • Highly motivated, self-starter with high standards of excellence, and an ability to multi- task, prioritize, and work efficiently.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with children, parents, and leadership of the Temple, both verbally and in writng.

  • Inspires excitement and enthusiasm, for teaching and learning, through the development of creative and interactive student engagement.

  • Exhibits initiative and good judgment, as well as excellent time management skills and a work/life balance.

  • Knowledge of Reform Judaism (practices, holidays, customs) and a commitment to Jewish life.

  • Pursues professional, Jewish, and personal growth including continuing education as a Religious School director.

  • Strong interpersonal and decision-making skills.

  • Effective administrative skills, including attention to details, organization, and written

    communication.

  • Experience in education or Jewish education.

  • Supervisory experience preferred.

  • Computer literacy (including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.)

  • Experience in using a variety of social media.

  • Job Specifics (salary benefits, and hours)

  • The position is 20 hours per week with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2023.

  • Required hours in the building are 8:00am – 1:00 pm on Sundays while school is in

    session. The remaining hours are flexible depending on programing and other

    instructional needs.

  • The annual salary for the position is competitve, commensurate with experience (range:

    $35-45,000 annually.)

  • The position includes two weeks of “Personal Time Off” with no more than two Sundays

    during the school year.

  • Membership dues in ARJE (Association of Reform Jewish Educators.)

  • Up to $1,000 annually for attendance at conventions.

  • Family membership at Temple Beth Orr.
