Temple Beth Sholom is a synagogue located in San Leandro, in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area that has grown 50% in the last 2 years following a complete “reboot” of our organization. We are a diverse congregation, with a preschool for 49 children and innovative K-B.Mitzvah after school program and camp programming, which serves over 30 children. Though still small, TBS is emerging as a synagogue to watch, becoming known as early adopters of forward thinking solutions to trends in synagogue membership, synagogue relevance, and community resiliency. We have had our fabulous Cantor acting as our sole clergy and have been without a Rabbi for over three years. As the needs of our congregation are growing we are looking for an inspiring Rabbi with the skill and inclination to continue to help define and grow our community by joining us as the Spiritual Leader of our community. Ideally our new Rabbi will be joining us early in the summer of 2022.
Our congregation is unaffiliated. Our membership includes members from a broad spectrum of Jewish background and practice. Our households represent a wide variety of family constellations, ages, gender identities, race/ethnicity identities, languages spoken, sexuality identities, and physical/neuro diversities, and interfaith identities. We seek a Rabbi who is looking forward to leading and partnering with such a community.
Our congregation is on the forefront of many organizational trends in the role of synagogues, including 100% voluntary dues, and what it means to support Jewish life in light of shifting generational trends. Our next Rabbi will feel aligned with our mission to provide a Jewish village for our members, our focus on “belonging”. Our next Rabbi will understand the importance of community engagement, human centered design, a wide definition of meaningful ritual, and is willing to be creative in how they are serving a Jewish community as the community evolves. Our next Rabbi will keep a question close to their hearts “what do our members need in their lives and how do we offer that in a Jewish way”.
Lastly, TBS has begun the process of partnering with the City of San Leandro to be named a resiliency hub. We are undergoing a training process to identify which assets of our organization allow us to be available as a community hub in both prevention of and response to community and civic challenges including climate resiliency and crisis response. We seek a Rabbi who recognizes that a synagogue can be an anchor for an entire neighborhood or town, and who will establish and foster relationships with other local organizations.
