Location:         Remote/Online (Default)/In person meetings and events, as needed  

(Strong preference for someone in the Chicago Metropolitan Area; occasional in-person programming, meetings, and camp retreats. Summers: In person at URJ OSRUI and NFTY in Israel.)

Salary Range:        $48,000 - $55,000 plus competitive benefits package 

 


 

THE ROLE 

The Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Camping & Immersives department seeks a passionate community builder to be a full-time Teen Mentor for the URJ’s Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute (OSRUI) Camp/Mid-West Region. The Teen Mentor bridges the space between camp engagement, community organizing, and youth development by both catalyzing a core belief in young people’s individual and collective power, and partnering to create an inclusive, safe, and supportive year-round Reform teen community in the Mid-West.  The Teen Mentor works to create a vibrant, diverse, and powerful youth community where teens from a wide range of backgrounds (including Teens of Color, LGBTQ+ identifying teens, teens with disabilities, and other marginalized identities) can experience wholeness, justice, equity, love and joy in Judaism. Working in collaboration with the OSRUI camp team, the URJ Teen Organizing team, and the network of synagogue partners, the Teen Mentor will develop, train, and mentor teens as they increasingly grow NFTY to be a movement that centers youth leadership, reflects the values, interests, and aspirations of teens and their peers, partners with Reform synagogues and like-minded communities, and welcomes alumni/volunteers to be adult allies.  

WHAT YOU WILL DO 

The Mid-West Teen Mentor reports to the Camp Director of OSRUI and is responsible for the following: 

REGIONAL TEEN ENGAGEMENT/NFTY (50%) 

Mentoring and Organizing Teens  

  • Organize & mentor regional teen leaders from a wide range of backgrounds in grades 6-12, in the Chicago and Northern regions, to support the creation of the youth movement that they envision. 

  • Provide one-to-one and group coaching and mentoring for teen leaders (both on and beyond the regional board). 

Community Leadership 

  • Be an active member of the North American Regional Mentor team and take part in weekly meetings and trainings. 

  • Ensure all teen in-person and virtual experiences operate according to URJ policies/procedures, including Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (REDI) practices and within budget.  

  • Communicate URJ youth related information to Mid-West stakeholders (clergy, youth advisors, parents, lay leaders and teens) with the goal of sharing information and engaging stakeholders. Communications should put teen leadership at the center.   

Event Support and Planning  

  • In collaboration with teens and the OSRUI camp team, oversee the annual Mid-West event (NFTY CAR/NO) at OSRUI, including implementation and oversight. Ensure event is youth powered. Mentor youth leaders to establish written and detailed learning and experience outcomes and embrace varied modalities of learning to create a holistic and inclusive experience for all participants. Create and implement event evaluation.  

  • Member of the staff for North American Teen Leadership Summit training held at OSRUI. 

Organize local synagogue leaders and volunteers to grow the Movement 

  • Organize local synagogue leaders to build a strong network of professionals who support one another and see the value of working together to center teen leaders and build a strong Reform Youth Movement. 

  • Network with congregations and other Jewish organizations in the area to ensure collaboration that benefits Jewish teens in the region. 

  • Utilize the systems and structures created by the NFTY NA Organizer for Local Communities and Synagogues to support the implementation of NFTYx events for grades 6-12 in the region by building the NFTYx program calendar, supporting congregations through the process, ensuring the centering of teen leaders, and sharing publicity. 

  • Utilizing the systems and structures built by the NFTY NA Organizer for Development and Volunteer Community, bring regional volunteers into the work of mentoring teen leaders, volunteering to create program and opportunity, and donating to support NFTY locally and across North America.     

  • Prioritize the engagement of teens from underrepresented and marginalize backgrounds including Teens of Color, LGBTQ+ identifying teens, teens with disabilities and other identities.            

CAMP & ISRAEL (50%) 

  • Active member of the OSRUI camp team. 

  • Support recruitment and retention of teen campers through year-round engagement.  

  • Recruit for the NFTY Summer in Israel trip in partnership with teens, the NFTY in Israel team, and the OSRUI team. 

  • Create a cohesive experience for teens that connects NFTY, camp, and Israel programming throughout the year.   

  • Act as an ambassador and recruiter for all URJ youth programs including but not limited to URJ Camps, NFTY in Israel, Heller High, and Religious Action Center youth experiences.  

  • Staff the OSRUI summer teen Israel trip (5 weeks in Israel, including pre-trip trainings). 

  • Provide leadership and engagement opportunities for OSRUI and Mid-west teens when they return from their Israel summer (as part of larger URJ Israel team).

Proven ability to bridge and build powerful, reciprocal relationships across difference and to help others do the same. Effective oral and written communication skills.   

  • Initiative. Enjoys working hard; is action oriented and full of energy for worthwhile activities; able to take meaningful calculated risks; seizes opportunities; sets demanding but achievable objectives for self and in partnership with youth leadership; sets appropriate personal work objectives, measures own progress; identifies personal gaps in knowledge and skill; undertakes appropriate activities to develop needed skills; and seeks regular feedback on performance.  

  • Reform Judaism. Has a love of the Jewish community and an appreciation of synagogues, NFTY, camps, Justice work, and Israel programs and their ability to transform individuals and communities Familiarity with Reform Judaism and the Reform Jewish community. 

  • REDI Experience (Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion). Demonstrated experience prioritizing and executing on Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (i.e., ableism, LGBTQ+ Inclusion, antiracism, etc.) priorities.  

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • In-person meetings, as needed. 

  • Participate in camp, NFTY, and Israel Immersive recruiting visits throughout the fall and winter season. 

  • Spend approx. 1 weekend per month at camp during the academic year 

  • 5 weeks in Israel leading NFTY in Israel experience for teens 

  • In residence at OSRUI during the summer when not in Israel.
