Temple Beth Ami is a vibrant Reform congregation in Rockville, MD serving a multi-generational community through a robust range of services and programming. The Senior Accountant provides financial oversight of all accounting and payroll functions.

The ideal candidate will have 7+ years of nonprofit accounting, payroll, and benefits administration; understanding of internal control and compliance; strong organizational and analytical skills; and high attention to detail. This individual directly reports to the Executive Director. Specific responsibilities include:

Accounting

  • Prepare and post journal entries and account reconciliations
  • File and complete month-end and year-end closings, complete balance sheet and profits and losses analyses, complete and report monthly variances, and ensure accuracy of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and internal policies
  • Record monthly fixed asset additions, disposals, and depreciation
  • Manage annual audit process
  • Manage cemetery inventory and associated funds
  • Manage revenue and expenses of multiple endowment funds and provide associated reporting in collaboration with lay leadership
  • Supervise FT bookkeeper, who manages accounts payable and accounts receivable
  • Prepare all monthly bank reconciliations
  • Monitor bank balance levels and initiate transfer between accounts for anticipated low balances
  • Collaborate on preparation of the annual budget with executive director and lay led budget committee

Payroll and Benefits Administration

  • Prepare and submit payroll for all staff to third-party processer
  • Oversee third-party processor administration of W-2s, 941s, and 1099s
  • Prepare and record semi-monthly payroll journal entries
  • Manage benefits administration, including healthcare, retirement plan, flexible spending accounts, professional development, and LTD
  • Manage paid time off balances

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • 7+ years of experience in accounting, payroll, and benefits administration in nonprofit environment
  • Full understanding of cash and accrual accounting methods
  • Highly proficient in Quickbooks Online and MS Office Suite including Teams
  • Strong Excel skills for large data analysis and monthly reporting
  • Experience in online membership CRM database preferred
  • Ability to analyze financial data, recognize errors, and implement corrections
  • Dedication to and capacity for management of continuous improvement of all accounting and payroll functions, including transitioning traditional paper-based systems to online management tools
  • Excellent skills in organization, being detail-oriented, managing priorities, multi-tasking, performing under pressure, and completing projects with deadlines
  • Ability to think independently and critically
  • Ability to work well in a team setting
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with a demonstrated commitment to customer service
  • Commitment to being highly ethical, including but not limited to respecting confidentiality and maintaining high professional standards of integrity

Salary Range

$85,000 - $95,000 based on experience
