Congregation Shaarey Zedek (CSZ) Religious School is seeking a part-time Youth Advisor to join our Religious School, Youth, and Family Learning team. CSZ is a joyful Conservative Jewish congregation in Metropolitan Detroit. We offer fun youth group activities for children ages 0 – 18, and we seek a qualified applicant to develop fresh programming for our teenage cohort.
Our congregational Youth Group is affiliated with United Synagogue Youth (USY) and participates in all the group’s citywide programs and regional conventions. The Youth Advisor will lead all USY trips to conventions and coordinate with fellow advisors to facilitate and enrich the programs. The Youth Advisor will work directly with teens in the congregation to form a CSZ Youth Board, which will create monthly programs and events. The CSZ Youth Board is comprised of teens and relies upon the mentorship of the Youth Advisor to develop exciting and well-organized programming and activities. The Youth Advisor also ensures that these events include a strong element of Jewish education and ritual observance. The Youth advisor will recruit all teens in the synagogue to participate in activities and will engage Jewish learners of all levels to foster a welcoming, healthy, community-centered youth group.
Although there are opportunities to teach in a formal setting through this position, the role of Youth Advisor is primarily as an informal educator who facilitates fun programs with teens that complement their academic experiences and promote the values of Judaism in their lives.
As a CSZ Youth Advisor, you will:
Mentor teens and help them to create and facilitate monthly teen social events.
Meet with teens to hear their ideas for activities and recruit them to participate.
Assemble a teen board to serve as champions and partners in the youth group program.
Work with the teen board to strategize and plan.
Support the execution of activities, such as reserving venues, purchasing supplies, preparing schedules/curricula, etc.
Communicate with teens regularly using the most appropriate media.
Integrate new technologies and social media to create an online presence for CSZ Teens.
Integrate Hebrew language and Jewish teachings into events and meetings.
Collaborate with the Director of Youth & Family Learning, clergy members, and teaching staff.
Participate in paid staff training.
