Youth Group USY Advisor Job Description

 

The USY Advisor is responsible for working with the USY chapter. Working with the Director of Youth Programming and USY leadership, the USY Advisor is responsible for helping to organize quality and engaging programs; maintaining communication with members, potential members, and their parents; and developing leadership skills. The USY Advisor works with and is directly supervised by the Director of Youth Programming.

 

Specific Responsibilities include:

 

  • Work with the USY Executive Board Members and Debbie Deutsch, Director of Youth Programming, to develop an effective, engaging program including educational, religious, social, and cultural components. 
  • Conduct/Attend 4 events per month.  This includes but is not limited to cultivating a supplies list, purchasing items, submitting receipts for reimbursement to the Director of Youth Programming within one week after the program, arriving to the event at least 30 minutes before, executing the event, and staying at the event until all youth leave and everything is cleaned up, ordering pizza for Wacky Wednesdays, and providing the Director of Youth Programming a list of snacks to purchase for events and Wacky.
  • Help support Shabbat and holiday programs designed to engage youth in the synagogue community. 
  • Hold monthly meetings with the USY Executive Board Members to plan events and programs, in addition to executing leadership development initiatives. The USY Advisor provides leadership and direction to the Chapter President(s) and Executive Board Members, empowering them to take on responsibilities in running the chapter.
  • Keep accurate records of registered members and attendance at events.
  • Attend and supervise all USY events, and enforce all policies and religious standards at each event, including supervision, safety, driving, dress code, kashrut, Shabbat, etc.  Mandatory attendance is required at the following events unless otherwise agreed to by the Director of Youth Programming: Shabbat in the Park, Fall Subregional Convention, Regional General Board Weekend, Regional /USY Convention/ Yom Theme Park, Limo Lock-In, Purim Lock-in and Carnival, Ein Gedi Yom Chattanooga (if any), USY Elections, End of Year Banquet.
  • Work with the Director of Youth Programming in securing transportation for out of town events.
  • Ensure proper communication with chapter members, potential members, and their parents through social media, e-mail, phone, mail, and in-person. This includes creating and disseminating information via social media, WhatsApp, and other avenues at least two weeks prior to the event date. Provide content for Youth Department/Synagogue email digest as requested. 
  • Attending at least four Youth Committee meetings over the school year. 
  • Attending all Youth Department Staff Meetings, as requested.
  • Actively promote inter-chapter, sub-regional, regional, and international events; accompany participants to sub-regional and regional events, as requested. 

 

Key qualifications

  • Experience working with children, pre-teens and/or teens. 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team of professionals and volunteers. 
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to Jewish life and values.
  • Flexible schedule is very important
