General Position Description

The Jacksonville Jewish Center is a vibrant, Conservative congregation with 750 families located in Northeast Florida. The Jacksonville Jewish Center buzzes with activity seven days a week; our 34-acre campus is blessed with amazing outdoor and indoor spaces in which to offer myriad spiritual, educational, and social opportunities. We are excited to hire the next Director of the Bernard & Alice Selevan Religious School (Grades K-7). We are seeking a creative and passionate Jewish educator with high energy and a commitment to excellence; a talented leader who is also a warm and approachable “people person” committed to collaborative relationships. As our Director, you are responsible for the educational vision of our Religious School (RS). You will build community, developing connections between our families and the greater synagogue membership. You will also serve as a role model to people of all ages and operate as an integral member of the larger team of staff and clergy. As a leader on the professional staff, you will work with our synagogue’s team to recruit and retain families, and will oversee the administration of our RS and supervise affiliated programs. You should be comfortable with Conservative Judaism and committed to participating in the life of our congregational family. You will guide and inspire Jewish education and experiences for our learners and their families, in alignment with the broader mission and vision of the synagogue. 

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Faculty & Madrikhim
    1. Retain and develop RS faculty and madrikhim (teen volunteers)
    2. Communicate with faculty and madrikhim on a consistent and timely basis
    3. Establish an open and positive relationship with faculty and madrikhim 
  2. Curriculum
    1. Develop, implement, support and evaluate curriculum
    2. Support faculty with materials, as appropriate
  3. Administrative Responsibilities
    1. Budget 
    2. Ordering supplies 
    3. Calendar
    4. Become part of the Center team, forming relationships with colleagues and facilitating relationships between the school community and wider synagogue community
  4. Relationship with families
    1. Cultivate strong relationships with RS families
    2. Maintain regular communication via multiple platforms (email, Remind, etc.) to keep families apprised of updates & important events in a timely manner
    3. Devise and implement a plan to improve communications with families
  5. Family Engagement
    1. Manage annual Jewish Holiday Family Engagement school-wide events 
    2. Collaborate with faculty regarding content and format
  6. Student Recruitment
    1. Market the RS in the greater community
    2. Offer “Open Houses” for prospective families
    3. Communicate with prospective families and students
  7. Lay Leadership
    1. Develop a Religious School Board of Education made up of school stakeholders (i.e. faculty, parents, lay leaders, clergy, etc.)
    2. Collaborate with Board Chair to recruit new members, set meeting dates and define agenda
    3. Develop and support RS PTA/Room Parents
  8. Miscellaneous
    1. Participation in the leadership team for Shabbat/Holiday Youth & Family programming
    2. Active engagement with the greater Center community during Shabbat, holidays, special events, etc.

Desired Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred
  2. Minimum of 2 years experience as a teacher in a synagogue Religious School (or other Jewish educational setting) required 
  3. Minimum of 2 years school administrative experience preferred
  4. Strong organizational, interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills
  5. Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and discretion

Compensation and Work Schedule*

  • Salary $50,000
  • Tuition Discount at the Laurie Preschool/Martin J. Gottlieb Day School/Bernard & Alice Selevan Religious School
  • Standard FMLA/PTO as per our Employee Handbook

*This is 2/3 time position, and one that lends itself to a flexible schedule outside of regular school hours. It is understood that the Director’s presence and participation in evening and weekend events counts towards the hours of the work week. Evaluation of the success of the Director’s performance will not be based on the extent to which they keep regular office hours during the week, but rather their engagement in all aspects of the position.
