About Us

Temple Rodef Shalom is a Reform Jewish congregation located in the Northern Virginia suburbs just outside Washington, DC. Since our founding in 1962, we have grown into the largest Jewish congregation in Virginia, serving about 1,800 households. We serve 200 families in our Early Childhood Center, nearly 800 students in our Religious School, and hundreds of people who walk through our doors weekly to pray, sing, learn, connect, and mark life cycle moments.

About You

You bring a thoughtful, strategic approach to your work, informed by industry standards and best practices from the field. You have a proven record of successful editorial experience: directing content, design, and layout during the planning and production of various communications and publicity channels. You work collaboratively across all levels of an organization, gathering input and making key decisions to ensure a consistent, dynamic, and warm voice reflects the organization and aligns with our goals and vision. You are equally able to work independently, multi-task, and manage time effectively to meet deadlines. You have a strong attention to detail in all aspects of your work, especially in proofreading, editing, and readying materials for publication online or in print. You are familiar with Jewish culture and traditions or possess a strong desire and aptitude to learn more.

This position reports to the Director of Congregational Engagement and works closely with the full-time Communications Manager, clergy, and senior staff.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with senior leadership and the Communications Manager to draft content ideas and produce outlines for monthly publications, helping to gather all necessary material and ensuring a holistic approach to content, design, and layout
  • Provide editorial expertise for all materials, including the weekly e-blast, monthly print magazine, and program email, and our bi-annual printed program guide
  • Maintain internal communications calendar
  • Bring industry standards and best practices from the field to the temple, including reviewing for grammar and tone
  • Partner with senior leadership on special messaging, including:
    • Fundraising or membership communications
    • Response to world or community events from our clergy or senior leadership
    • Intense, time-bound projects like the High Holy Days or other holiday programs
  • Build and maintain trust through timely, accurate, and professional messaging

Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a related field: marketing, journalism, English, communications, etc.
  • 5+ years of experience in marketing, communications, PR, copy editing, or related field.
  • Extremely strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with high standards and principles regarding brand integrity and accuracy.
  • Strong project manager and team player who collaborates well with peers, high-level volunteers, and senior management
  • A strong understanding of non-profit or religious organizations is desirable; an understanding of Jewish rituals, customs, holidays and congregational relationships will be advantageous
