Director of Business Development and Community Engagement



Founded in 2000, SSEJ is the main source of humanitarian assistance for the Jewish community in Ethiopia. SSEJ, with its limited resources, provides basic medical care and food to the most vulnerable members of the community with a particular focus on the youngest children and pregnant women. Other programs include Jewish and secular education, as well as religious and other communal activities. The U.S. based operations are completely volunteer lead, with the organization’s roughly 80 full-time staff—including security guards, teachers, nurses, physical therapists, and social workers— located in Ethiopia. While high impact, the organization has low visibility, so there is amble room for growth.   SSEJ is a U.S. based 501(c)(3).


SSEJ is looking for a seasoned fundraising professional to lead the organization’s business development and community engagement efforts with the goal of expanding financial support for SSEJ’s programs in Ethiopia.  This role will work with our advisory team of local and international volunteers to identify potential sources of funding, run fundraisers, and create funding partnerships with individuals, corporations, foundations, and government institutions.  Central to this work is to develop tools to explain to donors what we do, why we do it, and the impact their support will have.  

The Directors primary goals are to lead the complete fundraising lifecycle, from identifying potential donors (private, NGO or federal grants) through the successful acquisition of funds.

Description of Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement partner engagement strategy
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with corporate and foundation partnerships, including Jewish organizations, global foundations, and companies
  • Cultivate relationships with high-net-worth individuals to expand the philanthropic base
  • Organize fundraising campaigns, including nontraditional activities, such as go-fund-me’s
  • Write reports to foundation, government, and other funders
  • Create and maintain funding calendar activities
  • Communicate to project managers and executive team regarding the
  • Serve as a liaison between SSEJ and funding agencies or organizations
  • Coordinate volunteer efforts and information sessions


  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in development
  • Have developed deep connections with key leaders of Jewish organizations and prominent Jewish Philanthropists
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work independently as this organization is almost exclusively staffed by volunteers
