GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
Full-time on-site Mon-Fri business hours position for savvy Finance Director with at least 5 years prior experience working in a fast-paced Conservative temple in Livingston, New Jersey. This position requires someone who has exceptional communication skills and the ability to be forward-facing reporting to the Executive Director, temple treasurer, and multiple committee chairs, and handling the lively personalities of our 600+ member families and other consumers of the organization. The ideal candidate for this role will have a patient disposition and be able to handle occasionally challenging conversations regarding payment and value for service. This role also involves the supervision of other financial personnel.
BUDGET:
-Work with treasurer and other officers/committee chairs, to prepare Temple’s annual budget; Assist school directors & committees with respective budget preparation.
-Monitor budget against actual revenue & expenditures on an ongoing basis; Keep directors & committees informed of results.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
-Direct & monitor ALL finance department activity & internal controls; help finance department staff as needed.
-Conduct cash management, transfers & cash flow forecasts to ensure Temple has sufficient cash to meet upcoming obligations.
-Conduct monthly bank reconciliations & maintenance on all temple funds/accounts.
-Maintain general ledger maintenance & input of all monthly accounting transactions.
-Maintain relationships with all affiliated banking institutions of the Temple.
FINANCIAL REPORTING:
-Provide Temple treasurer and president will all requested financial data.
-Prepare analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for operating and other Temple funds/accounts.
-Prepare treasurer’s cash status report every month for Executive Committee & Board of Education Committee meetings.
-Conduct full retrieval & analysis of financial information as required in report form for committees, executive director, treasurer, president, schools & committees as required/requested.
PAYROLL:
-Implementation of all provisions in professional staff contracts.
-Maintenance of salaries and benefits for all non-professional staff.
-Responsible for bi-monthly payroll.
ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE:
-Oversee billing for pre-school & religious school tuition, temple membership dues, and other charges of any kind.
-Responsible for setting up billing for various capital campaign pledges, fundraising & programming events.
-Responsible for responding to billing & payment questions from Temple members, school parents, or other affiliated families.
-In conjunction with the financial secretary, responsible for collections on member accounts, continual account monitoring ensuring timely payment of billed charges, Religious School and preschool tuitions, membership dues & other charges.
-Responsible for follow-up letters, emails & phone calls for timely collection of outstanding charges/bills.
ACCOUNTS PAYABLE:
-Responsible for review & monitoring of Accounts Payable and Disbursements.
-Ensure all disbursements are properly documented & approved for payments before processing.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION:
-A bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is mandatory.
-Minimum 5 years prior work experience with finance and accounting with a progressive demonstration of increasing responsibilities over time.
EXPERIENCE:
-CPA or managerial accounting with supervisory experience is highly desirable.
-Ability to handle front-facing client/member inquiries professionally and calmly.
-Outstanding attention to detail, accuracy, and accountability is essential for this position.
KEY COMPETENCIES:
-Knowledge of accounting and business software.
-Ability to navigate Excel effectively.
-Mastery/Understanding of utilizing payroll provider systems (such as PAYLOCITY, ADP, or PAYCHEX).
-Ability to learn proprietary software essential to the organization (ShulCloud) is expected.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
-This is a mostly sedentary position. Ability to sit long periods at a desk, ability to read computer screens, ability to speak on the telephone, and lift items to 10 pounds. Ability to navigate physically from office to window of office to speak with in-person visitors. Ability to communicate in English effectively and clearly.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
-The base salary range for this position is $70,000 to $85,000.
-This position comes with a 7% pension contribution.
-65% of the base cost for a single medical plan is covered by the employer. Employees can upgrade from a selection of health plans.
-Starting 2 weeks of paid vacation, all Federal holidays, and many additional Jewish holidays paid off (e.g.: Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, etc.)
