B'nai Mitzvah Tutor

Congregation Sukkat Shalom | Wilmette, IL, United States

Posted Date 6/20/2022

Congregation Sukkat Shalom seeks an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Torah tutor to meet on a weekly basis with our B’nai Mitzvah students. Sukkat Shalom, a Reform congregation in Wilmette, IL, is a vibrant synagogue community built on principles of acceptance and openness. We are a community that recognizes and celebrates that we all come from diverse religious backgrounds and share an authentic quest for spiritual meaning and depth within the world of modern Judaism.

The Sukkat Shalom B’nai Mitzvah program aims to engage students in the study of Torah in a casual, warm, and supportive community so that they grow to cherish Torah Study, the language of the Jewish people, and develop a deep personal connection to Jewish tradition and community. There are no minimum or maximum expectations of any of our students—we work to challenge them, but do not work in such a way that will cause them stress or anxiety. Through frequent meetings with their Torah Tutor, our Director of Liturgical Music and Pastoral Care, our Director of Education, and our Senior Rabbi, we hope to provide our students and their families with support and encouragement as they work to celebrate their B’nai Mitzvah.

  • Tutor Sukkat Shalom B’nai Mitzvah students. Approximately 4-5 hours/week. Lessons are generally scheduled Monday – Thursday, from 3:30 – 6:30 pm. Exact tutoring schedule depends on student availability. Friday afternoon and Sunday morning availability appreciated but not required. Each student meets with the tutor for a half hour, once per week. Candidates need NOT be available for the full range of days and times in order to apply for this role.
  • Work with student family and Director of Liturgical Music and Pastoral Care to identify a manageable weekly workload for each student.
  • Communicate with parents about upcoming lessons and arrange make-up sessions if necessary.
  • Communicate on a weekly basis about student progress with Director of Liturgical Music and Pastoral Care.

  • Warm, compassionate, and knowledgeable Hebrew educator
  • Knowledge of Torah trope as taught in “The Art of Torah Cantillation” by Marshall Portnoy and Josee Wolff.
  • Experience as a Hebrew teacher/tutor
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, staff, and students
  • Ability to teach in person at our synagogue, with online flexibility if necessary.
  • Hebrew fluency a plus, not required
