BJEP seeks an officiant for our 2025-2026 B'nai Mitzvah cohort of 7-9 students

BJEP (Boston-area Jewish Education Program) is seeking an officiant for our September 2025 - May 2026 B’nai Mitzvah program, with potential for continuation with subsequent cohorts. This is an exciting opportunity for a Rabbi or Rabbinical student to lead a small cohort of about nine (currently 6th grade) students as they study together as Jewish scholars and prepare for this important milestone, culminating in a shared B’nai Mitzvah ceremony. We invite all interested candidates to send a resume and letter of interest to [email protected].

About BJEP
BJEP is an independent Jewish education program on the Brandeis campus that offers Sunday morning classes for students in grades K-7 during the school year. We have been serving as a hub of Jewish learning and community on the Brandeis campus for 58 years. Our educators are Brandeis University undergraduate students, who bring their enthusiasm and joy to our classrooms using experiential learning including art, music and games as a means for children to explore Jewish values, Jewish identity, holiday celebrations, eco-Judaism, the practice of Tikkun Olam, and Hebrew. Role and Responsibilities

  • Craft, prepare, and lead the culminating prayer service celebrating our students (May 2026, date TBD). The specialness of this opportunity is to personalize and bring together a collaborative experience for a cohort of about nine students, who already have quite a camaraderie, for their shared B'nai Mitzvah.
  • Meet with seventh grade students on the Brandeis campus monthly during their Sunday morning BJEP classes to get to know them and counsel them in their studies. (Along with the torah portion, each student presents a service project or ethical topic, which they research and prepare during the school year.)
  • Support the seventh grade teacher, a Brandeis undergraduate student, in researching and compiling Jewish sources on ethical topics, teaching in an accessible way, guiding students through a process of meaningful reflection on their topics, supporting students as they finalize their projects, and practicing Torah portions.
  • Communicate progress with B’nai Mitzvah families, and serve as a point person for prospective cohort families.
  • Coordinate with our BJEP Hebrew Tutor, who will provide additional 1:1 Hebrew lessons for our students.
  • Rabbinical work can range from about 50 to 95 hours total from September 2025 through May 2026, at a base pay of $3150 to $5850. The lower end targets only the critical class times and preparation for the B'nai Mitzvah ceremony. The higher range includes more in-person educational activity and lesson planning. Note: We are willing to negotiate a higher compensation for an individual with more extensive rabbinical and/or teaching experience.
  • This role can also be supplemented with additional pay throughout the year as many or all of the nine families in this cohort have expressed interest in small group or individual Hebrew tutoring at a competitive tutoring rate.
  • This is an opportunity to shape your own role considering your capacity, interest, personal perspective and approach to support the 7-9 students and collaborate with their families and BJEB student faculty.
