About us

Temple Shalom is a Reform synagogue in Aberdeen, NJ. We are a warm, welcoming community seeking a qualified and experienced individual to serve in the part-time position of Director of Religious School.  S/he will be familiar with a Reform Jewish community and is supportive of progression from early childhood through post-B’nai Mitzvah education in Judaic and Hebrew studies

Responsibilities include:

  • Effectively set and manage education budget, establish curriculum with Clergy and the Education Committee, and supply input for educational and social events/programs.
  • Oversee Religious School operations, including staffing, training, and supervising of teachers, new student enrollment and registration, security/ weather emergency planning, and selecting and ordering required books, learning tools, and supplies.
  • Organize and lead teachers to administer curriculum cohesively.
  • Create a warm, positive culture and learning environment, emphasizing high expectations related to academic, personal, and Jewish values for all stakeholders.
  • Serve as a substitute teacher when necessary.
  • Attend class trips when necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with family and youth in our community, who are vital for the long-term health and stability of our community.
  • Hold director/teacher, as well as teacher/parent meetings to ensure continuity in communication.
  • Collaborate with clergy on perpetuating an engaging Adult Jewish Growth education program.
  • Work in conjunction with Office Manager/Education Administrator.
  • Coordinate holiday events, extracurricular activities, and Shabbat related experiences

Qualifications include

  • Trained at an accredited Jewish institution or; A Bachelor of Education with experience in running a small school.
  • Knowledge of Hebrew preferred
  • Understanding of Reform Judaism
  • Prior teaching experience in a Hebrew School setting.
