Temple Beth Ami is seeking a full-time interim cantor to help lead our congregation while we begin a search for our new permanent cantor. Applicants should be comfortable with both traditional and contemporary Jewish music in a highly participatory style. Our interim cantor will be a critical member of our clergy and senior staff teams and will report to our senior rabbi. They will have primary responsibility in the areas of worship, pastoral care, education, transition preparation and administration as follows:


  • Leading our congregation in song, maintaining the musical liturgy and traditions of our congregation
  • Planning, coordinating and co-officiating at Shabbat and Holy Day services with our rabbis
  • Leading our Shabbat band (the Shabbatones) for picnic Shabbatot over the summer and for other events (such as Shabbanukah).
  • Collaborating with volunteer director and providing musical support for our intergenerational Purim spiel
  • Planning, coordinating and co-officiating at life-cycle events for our congregants as requested.

Pastoral Care:

  • Counseling and advising members with respect to spiritual matters and issues of Jewish identity
  • Attending to the pastoral needs of members who are sick, hospitalized or homebound as appropriate
  • Attending to the needs of congregants who are in mourning

Education (in coordination with the Directors of the Early Childhood Program and Religious School as appropriate):

  • Coordinating our B’nei Mitzvah preparation program, supervising (and training) tutors, and monitoring each student’s progress. Guiding students and their families in preparation for their B’nei Mitzvah.
  • Planning and participating in the High School and Confirmation programs in partnership with our clergy team. Preparing Confirmation students for their service in the weeks immediately prior to the service.
  • Planning and participating in the weekly music education programs (including training and supervising song leaders) in the Religious school and the Early Childhood Program.

Transition Preparation

  • Providing a steady and empathetic presence during a challenging transitional time for our congregation
  • Supporting the congregation in its search for a permanent cantor


  • Attending and participating in all meetings of the Temple’s Board of Directors
  • Attending and participating in weekly Senior Staff and Clergy Staff meetings and monthly all-staff meetings
  • Supporting and Advising other Temple committees, as requested
  • Other duties as requested in collaboration with the Senior Rabbi
  • Work within the established budget and collaborate with Executive Director to prepare cantor-related budgets for the next fiscal year


  • Ordained Cantor
  • High Emotional Intelligence/Customer Support Orientation
  • Collaborative work ethic
  • Comfortable with audio-visual technology
  • Skilled with Mac OS, especially Keynote
  • Energetic service leader
  • Plays guitar and/or percussion
  • Experience working with children and adults of all ages
  • Local to the DMV

Term of Position: The anticipated start date is mid to late August 2024 and will end on June 30, 2025.

Salary Range: Annual base salary of $150-170k commensurate with experience. The actual salary will be prorated based on the start date. Additional benefits will also be provided.
