Director of Abraham Ratner Torah School and TIS Youth Groups (including USY)

Tifereth Israel Synagogue, located in San Diego, California, is a Conservative congregation affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Tifereth Israel Synagogue (TIS) seeks to hire a Torah School and Youth Director. This individual will oversee the weekly operations of the Torah School, including program management, curriculum implementation, staff supervision, and community outreach; additionally, they will oversee TIS’ USY and other youth groups. A successful candidate will partner with Synagogue staff to create a rich and robust experience for students and families. Our Torah School meets on Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.

 

Job Responsibilities Include:

  • Operate all administrative and programmatic aspects of the Torah School
  • Create a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment for all of our Torah School students, families, assistants, volunteers and
  • Engage regularly and build relationships with students and
  • Develop and continually update a dynamic curriculum that engages students in Jewish learning.
  • Hire, supervise, and mentor Torah School teachers and staff as needed.
  • Hold regular staff meetings, keep staff motivated, and resolve
  • Meet with parents and teachers to keep parents up to date on their child’s development and
  • In partnership with synagogue staff, plan and implement school-wide programs and holiday
  • Communicate regularly with current and prospective Torah School families, including writing school newsletters, providing tours and follow
  • Promote awareness of the Torah School and its services, ensuring successful enrollment and student
  • Develop and monitor the Torah School and Youth budget with our Education & Youth Vice President.
  • Oversee the planning and implementation of regularly-scheduled, varied youth activities (social, educational, religious, sporting, etc.) for a range of ages.
  • Communicate with the regional and national USY organizations and promote/participate in their events where possible.
  • Collaborate with other local Youth Directors.
  • Promote awareness of TIS youth groups and activities, with the goal of increasing engagement.
  • Oversee fundraising events for the Youth Department.
  • Promote youth leadership.

 

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience: 5+ years in a Jewish Religious School
  • Passion for Jewish learning and teaching
  • Deep understanding of Judaism and Jewish traditions, including Hebrew
  • Leadership in a Torah School or Jewish educational setting
  • Supervisory experience
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Program management
  • Ability to work as a team leader and team player
