Temple Bookkeeper Job Description

Location: Temple in Framingham, MA

Position Type:  Bookkeeper (Part-Time, 8 to 12 hours per week)

Direct Report to: Temple Treasurer along with Board of Trustees and Temple Administrator

Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience

Position Summary

The Temple Bookkeeper will manage and maintain the financial books of the Temple, ensuring accuracy, integrity, and compliance with accounting principles and organizational policies. This person will support the leadership in financial planning, reporting, and stewardship of resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Record and track all financial transactions: dues, donations (cash, check, online), event income, expenses, vendor invoices, etc.
  • Maintain general ledger, including accounts receivable.
  • Reconcile bank and credit card statements on a regular basis (e.g., monthly).
  • Prepare and process payroll for all Temple employees. Review payroll vendor’s reports including withholding tax filings and quarterly/year end reporting.
  • Maintain records of all restricted funds/contributions (e.g. earmarked for specific projects or causes).
  • Assist in preparation of annual budget in coordination with Temple leadership / Finance Committee.
  • Produce regular financial reports (monthly, quarterly, yearly) for Temple leadership, including income vs expenses and fund balances.
  • Manage vendor payments.
  • Make bank deposits for incoming Temple payments.
  • Other administrative tasks and special projects related to Temple finance: e.g. tracking assets and liabilities, responding to inquiries.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of (1-3+) years of bookkeeping experience, ideally with a nonprofit or religious organization.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit fund accounting (tracking restricted/unrestricted funds).
  • Proficient in accounting/bookkeeping software (e.g., QuickBooks, ShulCloud or other commonly used in nonprofits).
  • Strong skills in MS Office (especially Excel).
  • Attention to detail; high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong integrity, discretion, and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Good communication skills: able to report financial information to non-financial leadership.
