Position Summary

The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, grants management, audit, compliance, and financial reporting. This individual will play a key role in supporting the executive team and program leaders with strategic financial insights, while ensuring the organization maintains strong internal controls and complies with all regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Lead the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Maintain general ledger and chart of accounts
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes
  • Prepare financial reports for the executive team and board of directors
  • Track key performance indicators and assist with financial forecasting

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in coordination with department heads
  • Monitor actual vs. budget performance, provide variance analysis, and recommend course corrections
  • Prepare cash flow projections and monitor liquidity

Grants & Contracts Management

  • Track restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring proper allocation of grant dollars
  • Prepare financial reports for funders in coordination with development staff
  • Support proposal budgets and grant compliance requirements

Audit & Compliance

  • Serve as primary liaison with external auditors and manage the annual audit and 990 filing process
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations, and nonprofit best practices
  • Maintain internal control policies and procedures to safeguard assets

Team Leadership & Operations

  • Supervise and develop finance staff and/or external accounting partners
  • Collaborate with HR and operations teams on payroll, benefits, and insurance compliance
  • Recommend improvements to financial systems and processes

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit financial management
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and fund accounting
  • Experience managing budgets of $5M+ and overseeing external audits
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct) and Excel
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred:

  • CPA or equivalent designation
  • Experience with federal or state grant compliance (e.g., Uniform Guidance)
  • Knowledge of mental health or healthcare-related financial management
  • Experience working in a mission-driven, culturally diverse environment
