Full-Time After School Teacher 

 

We are looking for a dynamic after-school teacher to join our small teaching team in our innovative Jewish enrichment after-school program. This is a highly collaborative role with room for growth and development. Our students are wonderful and the families are incredibly supportive.  The successful candidate is an educator who truly loves working with and actively engaging with children in grades TK-6th.  It is an incredibly fun job with play at the heart of the program. This would be a great job for someone who has worked as a summer camp counselor and can envision making that type of work a year round gig. 

 

Our program picks up children from their elementary schools, and  runs five days a week.   Two days are dedicated to Jewish Enrichment Classes, which offer the Sunday/Hebrew School experience after school. 

 

This position is a full-time (30 hours) After School teaching position which qualifies for benefits. Those include a health care reimbursement plan, monthly accruing PTO, professional development opportunities, paid time off for Jewish High Holidays and Federal holidays, weekly staff appreciation snacks. And the possibility of additional summer hours at our newly launching summer camp.   

 

The position begins August 8th, 2022 for a week of staff training with school starting August 17th, 2022, our school year is in accordance with the San Leandro Unified District public school calendar. We do not have after programming over school breaks, but we do offer day camps which could offer additional employment opportunities. 

 

After-school Teacher Responsibilities:

  • Planning, preparing, and implementing a curriculum in partnership with the director that includes Hebrew, Judaic studies, art, STEAM, outdoor education, and various sports skills
  • Our program is designed to have teachers working with all age groups (Tk-6th) depending on the activity, but you will only be asked to teach curriculum to a single age group on our Jewish Enrichment days. 
  • Overseeing daily lesson plans and activities that focus on developing children's social and motor skills.
  • Support students in forming their own Jewish identities and work with students to explore aspects of Judaism including teaching basics of the Hebrew Alphabet/Prayers and other age-appropriate Jewish education topics.
  • Assisting children with assignments and homework, such as reading, writing, and math.
  • Preparing learning materials and equipment, such as books, arts and crafts, stationery, and other supplies as needed.
  • Modeling and Teaching non-violent communication skills to students to resolve conflicts 
  • Interacting with children to provide guidance, emotional support, and motivation to complete tasks.
  • Maintaining an organized and clean classroom environment and ensuring students conduct themselves appropriately

After-school Teacher Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in teaching, early childhood education, or a similar field.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience working as an after-school teacher, teaching assistant, Hebrew school teacher, or a similar role.
  • Ability to foster a fun and safe classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Strong knowledge of child behavior and learning patterns.
  • Ability to work with children and remain friendly, calm, and patient at all times.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to set rules and guidelines for children to follow.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to maintain a tidy and neat classroom.

Desired:

  • Some experience managing students in an after school program or similar program setting
  • Familiarity with Hebrew sufficient to teach beginning Hebrew readers to decode the language of blessings and common Hebrew words, or teach younger children the basics of the aleph bet. 
  • Ability to work well with other teachers and follow directions from their supervisor 
  • Interest in Jewish traditions and hands-on learning.
  • A strong background in Judaism, including Hebrew, Jewish history, Torah, and general child development. 
  • To ensure success as an after-school teacher, you should be able to encourage social, physical, and intellectual growth within children and possess a strategic mindset. 
  • Ultimately, a top-notch after-school teacher should be a friendly, approachable individual with a passion for teaching and excellent communication skills.

 

The successful candidate will also demonstrate a passion for Jewish education and a commitment to respecting and honoring the various identities of people in our diverse Jewish community, which includes Jews of Color, People of Color, families of color, multiracial families, LGBTQ families and individuals, Jews by choice, interfaith families, non-Jewish students and parents and staff, multilingual families, multiple Jewish ethnicities (e.g. Ashkenazi and Sefardi), and Jews with different approaches to Jewish life, practice, and belief.

 

Compensation and Benefits:
