Director of Member Engagement & Programming

Location: Irvine, CA | Status: Full-Time, Salaried | Reports to: Senior Director of Education & Engagement


Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot (SHM) seeks a dynamic Director of Member Engagement & Programming to foster community, deepen relationships, and create meaningful programming for our congregation of over 725 family member units. This full-time role focuses on welcoming new members, engaging current members, and developing events that reflect SHM’s mission and value.

Our Director of Member Engagement and Programming is someone who is a self starter, can work independently as well as with the team, is creative and outgoing, willing to make connections with all members, is passionate about a meaningful Jewish journey, and more.

 

Key Responsibilities

Membership Engagement & Retention
- Recruit and market to attract new members to our synagogue, showing them why “SHM is the place to be”.
- Welcome and onboard new members, ensuring a smooth integration into synagogue life and creating a solid foundation for a lifetime of belonging.
- Develop and manage strategies for member engagement, retention, and outreach.
- Build relationships with members and create opportunities for connection (social events, chavurot, volunteer activities).
- Partner with Communications to create compelling marketing and track engagement data.

Programming
- Design, implement, and evaluate engaging programs in partnership with staff and lay leaders (e.g., social, cultural, interfaith, and community-wide events).
- Review and enhance existing programs to expand reach and impact.
- Manage program calendars, track participation, and promote events through effective campaigns.
- Be the liaison with committees as the staff point person.

Administration & Leadership
- Oversee membership systems (ShulCloud), materials, and billing communications.
- Lead initiatives such as the Chavurah program.
- Collaborate with clergy, staff, and lay leaders to support SHM’s vision.
- Participate in staff meetings and temple-wide events, including select Shabbats and holidays.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of experience in membership, engagement, event planning, or related fields.
- Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills; warm, approachable, and community-oriented.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CRM systems (ShulCloud a plus). Knowledge of Jewish traditions and comfort working within a synagogue community. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and Jewish holidays.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $70,000-$75,000 (commensurate with experience).
- Benefits: 401(k), FSA, life insurance, paid time off, complimentary temple membership.
- Work Location: In-person, Irvine, CA.
