About the Orthodox Union and Teach Coalition:

Founded in 1898, the Orthodox Union, (OU), serves as the voice of American Orthodox Jewry, with over
400 congregations in its synagogue network. As the umbrella organization for American Orthodox Jewry,
the OU is at the forefront of advocacy work on both state and federal levels, outreach to Jewish teens
and young professionals through NCSY and Birthright Israel/Israel Free Spirit trip organizer, and
Yachad, the National Jewish Council for Disabilities, among many other divisions and programs.
Teach Coalition was founded in 2013 to solve the tuition crisis in nonpublic schools. With a deep
network of grassroots activists, community leaders and lawmakers across the country, Teach Coalition is
the leading single-issue advocacy network invested in the quality, safety, and accessibility of nonpublic
schools. Teach Coalition currently operates in several states around the country, including New York,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Maryland.


Position Summary:

The Director of Teach MD will manage community engagement, development and mobilization of the
Maryland Jewish day school and yeshiva community. The Director will serve as the “face” of the effort.
This position will hold additional responsibilities as determined by the Executive Committee and Regional Director.


Primary Responsibilities:

• Recruit lay leaders and train them on how to be effective grassroots/grass-tops advocates
• Initiate and implement a development (fundraising) plan based on goals set by the Teach Coalition
COO and Regional Director
• Strategize with consultants and advisors on political and policy goals
• Spearhead engagement opportunities such as board meetings, forums, briefings, and advocacy
training sessions, grass roots advocacy campaigns, rallies, missions and synagogue programs
• Hold regular meetings with elected officials, school leadership and community members
• Travel to local school offices, elected official offices and Annapolis as needed
• Represent and be the “face” of this initiative via public speaking and appearances at synagogue, day
school and regional events
• Communicate messaging, talking points, and Action Alerts to the community through a web
• Recruit and solicit school memberships and be the point of contact for school members and
partnering institutions
• Other pertinent duties


Prior Experience, Competencies and Skills Required:

• Minimum 5 years of experience in development, advocacy and grassroots organizing
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
• A proven track-record of development success in prior roles
• Strong knowledge of Jewish day school and yeshiva landscape in Maryland
• Leadership skills necessary for managing operations of an advocacy organization
• Resourceful and solution-oriented in the day-to-day oversight of teams, projects and individuals
• Ability to conduct meetings, make presentations, and facilitate communications in a clear,
concise and positive manner
• Ability to represent and effectively communicate the role that grassroots lay leadership plays in
political advocacy
• Deep understanding of the craft of project management, work flow and supporting
• Excellent in writing, organization, strategic thinking, time management, and interpersonal
• Dedicated to the value of the Jewish community
• Ability to self-motivate, prioritize, work independently and complete multiple assignments with
attention to detail in fast paced, rapidly changing environment
Compensation and Benefits Package

Salary Range commensurate with experience – $75,000 – $85,000
