K-8 Librarian

 

FLSA Classification: Full-time August 2024-February 2025 (Maternity Leave)

Reports To: Director of the Lower School

Position Purpose: To provide leadership and operate the school’s library/media resource program

 

The Brandeis School of San Francisco inspires students to lead lives of learning and purpose. We provide a challenging academic environment and a welcoming, inclusive community, each deeply enriched by Jewish thought, values, and traditions. We are seeking a librarian/media resource specialist for August 2024 through February 2025 school year for a maternity leave. The librarian/media resource specialist assumes responsibilities related to the effective operation and evaluation of the school's library/media resources and literature programs. This position will begin in mid-August 2024.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs, organizes, and provides services essential to the media resource program, centered on students' and teachers’ needs and the instructional goals of the school.
  • Light to moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds)
  • Conducts collection development with purchasing new titles to enrich the library collection, processes titles, and catalogs titles using Follett Destiny library system.
  • Updates and maintains student records regularly.
  • Utilizes library vendors, Follett Destiny, and Titlewave and builds relationships with local bookstores and organizes author visits.
  • Supports book clubs, and assists in selecting titles for classroom and/or schoolwide literature programming.
  • Conducts reader advisories for students across grades K-8.
  • Continuously evaluates the library collection with an emphasis on DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging), and works to optimize the catalog to support the school-wide curriculum and encourage student recreational reading.
  • Works with the head of school, director of lower school, director of middle school, and the director of technology to develop and implement a sequential program of information literacy for teachers and students.
  • Supports research projects and develops and implements curriculum and programs that builds student skills to conduct research, assess digital information effectively, and be responsible digital citizens.
  • Acts as a mentor to teachers and staff on matters dealing with information literacy and advises them on techniques and resources to enhance classroom instruction.
  • Keeps the teachers and leadership team informed of issues, needs, and the operation of the school's media resource program.

 

Educational Leadership

 

  • Keeps informed of new and emerging technologies and their potential impact on successful instruction and learning, providing systematic whole group, small group, and one-on-one instruction to teachers and staff on their use.
  • Keeps abreast of trends and new titles in elementary and young adult writing that would meet the interest of our student body and instructional threads of our curriculum
  • Encourages and stimulates the search for effective and innovative methods of instruction.
  • Works closely with teachers and the the DEIB committee to plan for staff and curriculum development to meet specific school goals/needs.

 

Position Qualifications

 

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A master’s degree in library science from an accredited college or university preferred, with a preference given to those accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Certification valid for service as a library media specialist in the California.
  • Social-emotional teaching experience
  • At least five years in education preferred, three years of were as a library media specialist in a school setting.
