Director of Barnert Temple Preschool and Family Center

Barnert Temple is a vibrant Reform congregation in Franklin Lakes, NJ.  At present, our Preschool has 60 students beginning their journey in our early childhood program.

The Barnert Temple Preschool and Family Center is a developmental Early Childhood Program with an emergent, discovery-based curriculum. The philosophy of the Preschool is inspired by the practices of the Reggio Emilia approach and based on the theories of Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson, Gardner, and constructivist education. Our preschoolers spend as much time outdoors as in and view nature as a second classroom.

The Director of the Barnert Temple Preschool and Family Center will take the reins of a growing, healthy preschool with a 33-year reputation of excellence. The Director will be responsible for all aspects of administration, supervision, and curriculum development, adhering to the core principles of Reform Judaism. The Director will be the '' face” of Barnert’s Early Childhood programming, working alongside our clergy and the Jewish Journey Project (JJP) Director, opening doors to family-centered educational activities and cultivating partnerships with parents.

The full-time 12 month Preschool and Camp Director will report to the Senior Rabbi and be responsible for the following:

Instructional Leadership:

  • Recruit, hire, and supervise Preschool teachers, substitute teachers, and Camp Staff.
  • Build a collaborative culture of teachers and families working together to support all children.
  • Evaluate teacher and camp staff performance and provide access to professional development.
  • Develop curriculum aligned with the Preschool’s philosophy.
  • Work with teachers on modifying instruction to support students with diverse learning needs.
  • Support families in building a toolbox of parenting skills using Jewish values.
  • Remain current in Early Childhood Education trends and methodologies.

 Administration:

  • Internal and External Communications
    • Create and distribute communications including program updates, calendar changes and Temple activities to families, lay leadership, and Temple membership.
    • Attend Board and Leadership Council Meetings, when requested.
    • Collaborate with the lay-led Lifelong Learning Committee.
    • Do routine check-ins with Preschool staff and families.
    • Maintain open communications with and support the work of the Barnert Temple Preschool Parents Association (BTPPA).
    • Supervise the School Administrative Assistant.

Budget and Finance:

  • In collaboration with a Finance Committee representative, plan and oversee Preschool budget development and management.
    • Stay informed re: tuitions in local programs to set tuition fees and staff salaries competitively.
    • Establish charges for extra programs such as field trips and draft forms for registration.
    • Manage expenses according to budget.
    • Assist with payroll preparation.

Licensing and Facilities

  • Develop and implement a facilities utilization plan in compliance with all State of NJ School Code regulations.
  • Oversee the maintenance of confidential student and staff records, including attendance, immunization and other health and emergency information.

Program and Scheduling

  • Create the school and camp calendars and send necessary publicity for all events.
  • Work with the Office Manager on the facilities plan and schedule custodial and security staffing.
  • Partner with clergy to plan and lead Preschool worship experiences, holiday observances and family programs.
  • Create opportunities for young families who are prospective Temple members to experience Barnert programming.

Student Registration

  • Manage and oversee student registration process.
  • Maintain appropriate teacher to student ratios and class size.
  • Collect and maintain copies of protocols for students with special needs.
  • Connect parents with professional resources as needed.

Daily Management

  • Ensure appropriate staffing.
  • Communicate immediate parent or student needs to teachers.
  • Communicate with Temple Office re: any logistical changes.
  • Be available to parents when needed.
  • Ensure allergy awareness and compliance.
  • Manage emergencies.
    • Sick or injured child or teacher
    • Building issues impacting school

Other

  • Represent Barnert Temple at state and regional Early Childhood Educators meetings and ECE-RJ workshops.
  • Work with parent volunteers to organize fundraising initiatives and Preschool celebrations.
  • Collaborate with clergy and the Director of the Jewish Journey Project (JJP), our Religious School, to ensure a seamless transition for Preschool graduates to JJP.

Qualifications:

  • BA. and/ or M.A. equivalent in Early Childhood Education
  • Minimum 5-7 years teaching experience as an Early Childhood Educator
  • Knowledge of and enthusiasm for Reform Judaism
  • Strong organizational, communications, and team building skills
  • Ability to foster a warm and positive learning environment
  • Digital skills to support multi-access programming
  • Comfort using Microsoft Word, Excel, Google docs and Teams as well as Shul Cloud School Applications
