About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a member of the senior team, the Director of Operations is responsible for running and enhancing the internal organizational processes and infrastructure that allows Gateways to fulfill its mission. Primary areas of responsibility include finance, human resource management, IT, operations management, and legal compliance and risk management.

Key Duties and Responsibilities


  • Partner with CEO and support senior team in development and adaptation of annual programmatic goals to realize the long-term strategic plan objectives related to the above core program responsibilities.
  • Participate in (and lead when appropriate) senior staff team meetings and discussions.
  • Participate in meetings of lay committees as appropriate, including the HR task force and Finance Committee and as requested by the CEO.
  • Collaborate with other Gateways staff on special projects/activities.
  • Engage in regular personal professional development to maintain and improve skills. Maintain awareness of best/effective practices in finance, operations, IT, and HR.
  • Manage three Gateways staff members and outsourced providers as indicated below.


  • Manage and oversee staff team responsible for database management and office operations.
  • Responsible for facilities management for the Gateways office and program spaces.
  • Supervise IT functions and outsourced IT vendor.


  • Manage and oversee outsourced finance provider.
  • Attend Finance Committee meetings and relevant meetings/discussions with Board of Directors.
  • Advise on matters of organizational finance and planning in coordination with CEO, VP of Finance and Gateway’s outsourced finance provider.
  • Supervise office staff in the completion of all other finance functions, e.g. accounts payable, as directed and in coordination with Gateway’s outsourced finance provider.

Human resources (HR)

  • Manage and oversee all HR-related policies, processes, procedures, and related staff.
  • Oversee and work with HR staff on recruitment and hiring, professional training and development (including onboarding of new employees), retention strategies and evaluation processes, and managing employee engagement surveys and follow-up.
  • Ensure appropriate benefits administration.
  • Ensure regulatory oversight and compliance.
  • Oversee payroll functions and serve as back-up staff person to complete payroll in the event of absence of the primary payroll staff as directed and in coordination with Gateway’s outsourced finance provider.
  • Act as senior HR staff support for sensitive employee issues.

Legal compliance and risk management

  • Perform risk management and legal activities such as letters of agreement, contracts, leases, and other legal documents and agreements.
  • Ensure the procurement, monitoring and management of all aspects of insurance required for the organization.
  • Interface with advisory lay leaders and consultants as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of and compliance with relevant regulations and oversee organizational record-keeping.

Other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of a BA/BS required, MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
  • Strong operational experience: ideally has worked in non-profit operations for 7+ years with at least three years’ experience in finance/administrative management.
  • Demonstrated experience in overseeing finance, human resources, information technology, and legal areas.
  • Skills should include organizational development, personnel management, demonstrated success developing and monitoring systems.
  • Comfort working with sensitive information.
  • Excellent people skills, with an ability to think strategically and partner with a dynamic leadership team and staff with diverse learning styles.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the mission of Gateways.
  • Flexible and able to multi-task; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.
  • Understanding of the national Jewish community, including the networks of day schools, synagogues, and camps, preferred.

Compensation and Additional Information

  • Salary range is $90,000-100,000 annually, commensurate with experience. Open to consideration of candidates seeking a full-time position.
  • This position is year-round, exempt, 32 hours/week, and eligible for full-time benefits including generous paid time off, health, dental, and vision plan options, flexible spending account, SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with 3% employer match, and employer-paid long-term disability and life insurance.
  • Gateways is based in Newton, MA, with year-round staff working mainly remotely and office space available as needed for in-person work. While candidates outside the greater Boston area may apply for this position, in-person presence will be required for some meetings, especially relating to management and oversight of office and program spaces.
