Position Available: Administrative Assistant, Part-time

About Or Shalom: Or Shalom Jewish Community is San Francisco's only Reconstructionist congregation- welcoming people from all walks of life. We are a non-profit organization with approximately 170 households run from our office in Bernal Heights. Or Shalom weaves Jewish wisdom with the realities of modern life, offering interactive services, educational and hands-on classes, volunteer opportunities, and more. We are a music-loving congregation, with a lively ensemble of instrumentalists and vocalists. Our membership includes atheists, agnostics, interfaith families, Jews by choice, LGBTQ+ individuals, people of all races, people from Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox traditions, Ashkenazi, Sephardi, and Mizrahi Jews, and non-practicing Jews. Or Shalom is guided by our Rabbi and the Board. Day to day operations are run by the Interim Administrator.

Job Description: We are looking for a part-time Administrative Assistant to work under the supervision of the Interim Administrator, handling requests from the Board, Rabbi, and our congregants. The ideal candidate is personable and friendly, enjoys designing social media and email graphics, has an eye for detail, is consistent, and is eager to learn new skills. This ideal candidate must be able to work in-person at our Bernal Heights office in San Francisco, CA. A flexible hybrid schedule is open for discussion. Note: You may be asked to work on Shabbat/Jewish holidays and to help with B’mitzvahs.


  • Draft, circulate for edits, revise, and distribute our weekly newsletter and monthly targeted newsletters
  • Create and send email announcements as directed by the Interim Administrator
  • Update our website (simple text editor) 
  • Maintain internal/external calendars
  • Create graphics for social media and email marketing campaigns (Canva experience a plus)
  • Maintain and organize our file servers, including photo albums and congregant resources
  • Assist with maintaining information in our Shulcloud database, including editing member data, creating new webpages, events, and event registration (training provided)
  • Assist with fundraising campaigns, including direct mail, digital engagement, and data management (Proficiency in excel a plus)
  • Conduct inventory for supplies in our office and off-site service locations (Dolores Heights/Opera Plaza)
  • Provide general administrative support and special projects as needed 
  • Answer the office phone, email, and social media inquiries with cordialness

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma required, college degree preferred.
  • Previous work experience in an office setting.
  • An eye for detail and consistency
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, etc.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Team-oriented attitude with a proactive and efficient approach to work.

Preferred Experience:

  • Knowledge of membership software
  • Familiarity with ShulCloud, Constant Contact
  • Proficiency with Canva
  • Proficiency in graphic design


  • Approximately 16-20 hours/week – Onsite hours required with possibility of hybrid option.


  • Salary is hourly – $25 - $30
  • Vacation and sick days
