Part-Time Education Director

Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David (CBSBD) in Rockville Centre, NY, is seeking a part-time Jewish Education Director to work 15-20 hours per week, running our small but growing religious school.

We are seeking a strong educator who can also administer our school program.

With energy and enthusiasm, the Director will create a cohesive, nurturing and educational environment that promotes Jewish values, fosters a strong identity and facilitates a connection to Israel. The Director will develop and maintain formal and informal educational programs that will impart deep knowledge of Torah, Jewish history and culture, Hebrew language, and prayer.

The Director will bring a collaborative spirit in order to involve the students, teachers, families, clergy and lay leadership in the planning, programming and implementation of the educational programs.  

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development

  • Develop, edit curriculum for the Jewish Learning Center (JCL), 10+ children in
    grades K-7, setting benchmarks, goals and objectives along with evaluation
    standards for each grade level in Judaica and Hebrew in collaboration with the
    Rabbi and religious school board chair/members.
  • Support teachers to develop weekly lesson plans and activities that meet curriculum
    goals.
  • Select and prepare textbooks and resource materials.

Programming

  • Supervise and facilitate student and family programming including, but not limited
    to Junior Congregations, Shabbat Shadow, holiday celebrations, family Shabbat
    programs, tot Shabbat and special grade-level activities.

Administration

  • Hire, monitor and mentor religious school teachers.
  • Supervise all teacher recruitment and vet prospective teachers.
  • Lead and facilitate school programs.
  • Supervise all religious school sessions from September-June.
  • Develop calendar for next school session with approval of Rabbi and School
    board/chair, including specific activities and events, family education programs, etc.
  • Attend monthly JLC board meetings and other Temple meetings (for example,
    August calendar and Religious Life & Practices) when presence is requested either in
    person or virtually.
  • Monitor enrollment and participation in all JLC programs.
  • Enter all program dates into Temple’s Shulcloud calendar.
  • Responsible for all communications/flyers within JLC and to Temple community.
  • Prepare the annual Religious School budget in conjunction with board chair and in
    consultation with the treasurer.

Desired Qualifications

Deep knowledge of Jewish religious practice, history and culture.

Proficient in Hebrew language and prayer service preferred.

A bachelor’s degree in education or related field or commensurate experience.

Energetic, passionate and able to clearly communicate objectives.

Maintain a positive attitude and be open to feedback.

Experience in educational program administration at the elementary and/or secondary level.

Previous supervisory experience.

Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Computer literate.

Job Details

Start Date: June 2024

Time Commitment: average of 15-20 hours per week, with high degree of flexibility over the summer

Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
