Jewish Educator – Part Time

 

Join Temple Beth Sholom’s innovative after school Jewish Heritage School as the lead Jewish Educator. This position offers an opportunity to shape and deliver the Jewish education of a growing group of students of elementary and middle school ages in a trail-blazing program. There is ample room for creativity and growth in this position, which offers collaboration with the Jewish Heritage School staff, the Rabbi, and the rest of the Beth Sholom team. TBS’s Heritage School was founded one year ago and is growing; this position will focus on the current 2nd-6th grade enrollment of 13. Temple Beth Sholom is an independent, diverse, village center synagogue located in the heart of the East Bay in San Leandro, California. TBS places an emphasis on sustainability, climate action, and social justice.

The regular work schedule will be 6 instruction hours, divided evenly between Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, and up to 4 prep hours weekly during the course of the Jewish Heritage After School Program and one monthly staff meeting. 

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Developing and imparting high quality Jewish Education curriculum for a group of 13 children ranging from 2nd grade to 6th grade, including Hebrew, Torah, Tefillah, Jewish history, Jewish culture and practices
  • Planning lesson plans in accordance with the Jewish curriculum using multiple learning modalities such as song, movement, games, reading, drama, and more
  • Implementing lesson plans two days a week with the support/collaboration of the Jewish Heritage School staff
  • Lead T'filah for all-school in the Sanctuary
  • Develop individualized approaches to support each child’s learning, should specialized needs come up
  • Support students in forming their own Jewish identities and work with students to explore aspects of Judaism
  • Consult with Rabbi for curriculum development
  • Assume general responsibility for the health, safety, and wellbeing of all children
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the parents and staff
  • Perform duties in furtherance of the mission of Temple Beth Sholom
  • Assigned a role in emergency situations

 

`Physical Demands: 

  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g. computer keyboards, filing, etc.) 
  • Standing, sitting, or walking for significant periods of time 
  • Stooping or kneeling (e.g. to access lower shelves, attend to children)
  • Lifting and carrying light loads up to 40 lbs. 
  • Reaching (e.g. reaching to upper shelves, etc…)
  • All requirements are subject to possible modification to reasonably accommodate individuals with a disability, to the extent required by law

 

Other Job Duties:

  • Work with Director to communicate with parents regarding their questions, concerns
  • Compliance with applicable laws and regulations regarding a Heritage School
  • Maintains positive relationship with other staff and participates in conflict resolution when needed
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled 
  • Responsible for proper use of all equipment
  • Maintain the classroom in clean and sanitary conditions
  • Document student growth
  • Promote Temple Beth Sholom events and programming appropriate for families
  • Perform other duties as requested by the After School Director, or as agreed upon 

 

Job Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Fingerprinting and Background Check
  • Tuberculosis Testing
  • CPR certification required (TBS can provide this training)
  • Because this position may require moving between multiple groups of children, and in accordance with current guidelines, a full course of COVID-19 vaccination is required within 6 weeks of start date

 

A successful candidate will have:

  • A commitment to respecting and honoring the various identities of people in our diverse Jewish community, which includes Jews of Color, People of Color, families of color, multiracial families, LGBTQ families and individuals, Jews by choice, interfaith families, non-Jewish students and parents and staff, multilingual families, multiple Jewish ethnicities (e.g. Ashkenazi and Sefardi), and Jews with different approaches to Jewish life, practice, and belief.
  • Experience planning multimodal Jewish studies and Hebrew lessons
  • Ability to teach prayer book and Biblical Hebrew (proficiency in or mastery of spoken Hebrew is a plus)
  • A demonstrated track record of making Jewish education fun and engaging for children
  • Song leading skills are a plus
  • Experience with Jewish Outdoor, Food, Farming & Environmental Education is a plus
  • A love and passion for working with children

 

Compensation:

This is an hourly position for up to 10 hours per week at $38-$45/hour.

TBS Heritage School programs provide a safe place for children to come as they are, grow in their compassion, and invest in their Jewish identity. At our synagogue campus we enjoy a spacious outdoor area, classrooms, recreation hall, teen lounge, and a full library. All are welcome!
