Job Title:                  Controller     

Position Summary:

The controller supervises the financial operations of Temple Beth Emet consistent with generally accepted accounting principles, sound internal controls and financial management practices. Works with the rabbis, staff, temple board, committees and leadership in recording financial transactions, reporting financial results, cash management, investments and coordinating the work of external accountants. Responsible for managing and preparing the annual operating budget.  Also, responsible for the accounting and financial reporting of the Temple’s endowment. The controller supervises the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll functions.

 

Minimum Professional Requirements and Skills:

 Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.

  • 8+ years of accounting, financial analysis and reporting experience.
  • Experience supervising financial personnel and managing an accounting department, with an emphasis on team building and collaboration.
  • Computer and accounting software expertise including Excel, Word and QuickBooks, familiarity with Shul Cloud a strong plus.
  • Excellent communication skills including writing, oral presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; ability to manage people, priorities and workflow.
  • Experience developing and maintaining financial systems, policies, procedures and controls.
  • Knowledge of employment practices, policies and payroll processing.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to work on a variety of projects simultaneously and manage deadlines.

 

General Duties:

 Establish and maintain financial policies and procedures of the organization and ensure timely, accurate reporting of financial information.

  • Ensure a system of internal controls is established to safeguard Temple assets.
  • Support Temple clergy, School and Administrative staff and other department heads in their understanding of financial matters.
  • Coordinate the annual independent accountant’s report of Temple’s financial operations.
  • Maintain corporate documents and ensure Temple complies with various reporting requirements of local, state and federal agencies.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Other duties, functions or research as requested by Rabbi’s or appropriate Temple Board Officers.

 

  1. Supervise the daily accounting activities performed by the team, including but not limited to:
  • Maintaining all family accounts and student accounts.
  • Manage ShulCloud Financial Reporting and interface with QuickBooks.
  • Review all checks, charges and vendor invoices to be paid prior to signatures to ensure accuracy.
  • Work with professional and administrative staff to ensure that they properly submit and support invoices for payment and assign it to their budgeted accounts.
  • Maintain cash flow analysis.
  • Supervise and review quarterly payroll report.
  • Supervise the collection of accounts receivable by ensuring proper billings and timely monitoring the accounts receivable aging.
  • Administer the financial component of grants, including state funding for schools, and capital expenditures.
  • Administer the financial assistance process for students and members.

 

  1. Administer Temple Beth Emet’s financial operations according to GAAP.
  • Prepare financial statements (Balance Sheet, Statement of Income and Cash Flow), with all variances to budget noted, to review with rabbis followed by review with the Treasurer, Board President and Finance Committee.
  • Initiate and manage the budget process and collaborate with Finance Committee to present to board for approval. Provide monthly updates to Finance Committee.
  • Calculate and compare monthly budgets to approved annual budget and actual results.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of systems, policies procedures as needed.
  • Ensure TBE is in compliance with bank covenants.
