Kehila Chadasha, a progressive, independent Jewish community of about 100 families in the Washington, DC, area, seeks applicants for the position of interim rabbi/spiritual and community leader.

The part-time, interim position can start as early as November 1, 2022 and runs through June 30, 2023 with possibility of renewal until a permanent spiritual leader is hired.

As a congregation in transition from a long-term rabbi to a new permanent leader yet to be identified, we seek an experienced interim leader who can guide our inclusive,progressive, caring, and egalitarian community through this time.

The ideal candidate should be equipped to provide continuity through the coming year by:

  • guiding and participating in Sunday morning community gatherings, monthly
  • oneg shabbat and havdalah gatherings for both families and adult-only groups,
  • and in festival and holiday celebrations; working closely with our song leader
  • officiating at life cycle events
  • providing pastoral counseling
  • helping us come back together as a multi-generational community after COVID
  • disruptions
  • engaging in youth education (in conjunction with our Education Director) and
  • adult programming
  • communicating with the community on a regular basis

The candidate will guide, support, and advise us as we transition to a new, permanent leader, including but not limited to:

  • facilitating dialogue that helps the community prepare for a new spiritual leader
  • helping us identify the qualities we seek in our next permanent leader
  • advising on the search process
  • guiding us in best practices for welcoming a new leader

The candidate will help us recruit new members and Sunday School families and begin to implement the community’s sustainability goals, including, but not limited to:

  • guiding and re-imagining, where necessary, holiday celebrations and otheractivities
  • working with staff, board, and committees to help us implement a renewed vision and mission


The candidate will participate in and lead other duties as assigned or as necessary.

The ideal candidate has all or most of the following qualifications:

  • Experience as a congregational leader, including ability as an effective prayer leader
  • Experience and/or training in interim congregational leadership
  • Ability to be a warm, empathetic, and skilled listener who facilitates reflection and discussion
  • Ability to form relationships with the adults, teens, and children in our community
  • Comfort with multi-access (hybrid) worship services
  • Willingness to live in the Washington, DC metro area for the duration of the term of employment

Compensation: This is a half-time position with an annual salary range of $60-70K, prorated to the term of service.
