Job Title: Interim Executive Director
Location: Atlanta, GA
Reports To: Board of Directors / President
Employment Type: Full-Time, Interim (Approximately 6 –12 months)
Start Date: As soon as possible

Position Summary:

Congregation Or VeShalom, an uplifting, inclusive, and egalitarian synagogue rooted in Sephardic traditions and community seeks a qualified and mission-driven Interim Executive Director to guide the organization through a significant leadership transition. The Interim Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing daily operations, supervising staff, managing finances and facilities, and supporting the clergy and lay leadership in fulfilling the synagogue’s religious, educational, and cultural mission.

This individual will serve as a key leader and facilitator during a critical period, ensuring continuity and preparing the organization for a successful handoff to permanent leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership

  • Provide stable and effective leadership during the interim period.
  • Partner with clergy, staff, and lay leaders to ensure alignment of administrative and programmatic functions.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Board of Directors, clergy, staff, and the broader congregation.
  • Identify areas for improvement and recommend operational enhancements.

Staff & Human Resources

  • Supervise administrative, facilities, and support staff; oversee day-to-day responsibilities, performance, and scheduling.
  • Maintain a collaborative and respectful workplace culture in alignment with Jewish values.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal employment guidelines and requirements.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and training efforts as needed.

Finance & Budget Management

  • Oversee financial operations in coordination with the Treasurer and Finance Committee; oversee the issuance of timely financial reports to the Board of Trustees
  • Monitor cash flow, dues collections, and fundraising processes.
  • Ensure proper financial controls and compliance with nonprofit accounting practices and all Federal, State and local tax reporting requirements.

Facilities & Operations

  • Oversee maintenance, safety, security, and use of synagogue buildings and grounds.
  • Manage vendor relationships, facility scheduling, and capital improvement projects.
  • Support planning and logistics for services, programs, events, and facility rentals.

Communications & Membership

  • Ensure consistent and effective communication with members through email, newsletters, website, and social media.
  • Serve as a point of contact for congregants and provide support with warmth and professionalism.
  • Assist in membership engagement, retention, and outreach efforts in collaboration with staff, lay leaders and clergy.

Program & Clergy Support

  • Partner with clergy and staff to ensure smooth execution of religious services, holidays, life-cycle events, and educational programming.
  • Coordinate logistics and administrative support for synagogue programs, including religious school, adult education, and community events.
  • Support synagogue committees and volunteer initiatives.
  • Oversee all administrative aspects of the High Holy Days including, but not limited to, membership data, verification of eligibility to receive tickets, ticket distribution and sales, Yizkor book, ushers, security, and all related logistics and planning.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in nonprofit or synagogue administration; experience in a Conservative / Sephardic synagogue or Jewish communal setting preferred.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with Conservative Jewish practice, values, and congregational life.
  • Financial management experience including budgeting, reporting, and oversight of operational finances.
  • Proficiency with office technology, synagogue database systems (ShulCloud), Quickbooks, Google Suite, Microsoft Office and digital communication platforms.
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on operational management.
