Job Overview

B’nai Jeshurun is seeking part-time creative, dedicated educators to teach in our Hebrew School program, Kadima@BJ. We are searching for enthusiastic and knowledgeable individuals to fill the role of Substitute Teacher who will partner with us in keeping Judaism relevant and exciting for our students and their families. 

Our Kadima@BJ program places an emphasis on tefillah, spirituality, music, and community. Kadima@BJ meets on Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00 PM. Teachers are expected to arrive between 3:40-3:45 PM to prepare their classrooms and should expect to leave after dismissal and cleaning up your classroom/ returning supplies.   

Kadima@BJ teachers report to the Associate Director of Family Life and Learning. 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Assist the lead teacher and assistant teachers in fulfilling the Kadima curriculum, preparing materials, ensuring a clean classroom, helping students that need a break outside of the classroom, maintaining accurate attendance records, and implementing classroom management as determined by the lead teacher and the Associate Director. 
  • Act as a positive Jewish role model for our students
  • Fill in as a lead or assistant teacher depending on the schools needs 
  • Work with students in Kindergarten through 6th grade 
  • Implement lesson plans and projects along with your grade team 
  • Teach curriculum through a hands on, art based, experiential approach to learning
  • Teach Judaic content in accordance with our pre- planned curriculum units
  • Lead and assist individual students as needed to help them thrive in the classroom
  • Ensure a safe and healthy environment for learning in connection with all school activities
  • Attend staff orientation before working with students 

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Jewish knowledge and background
  • Experience working with children in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade (i.e., educator, camp, babysitting, etc.)
  • Patience and flexibility
  • Desire to create relationships with students and the Kadima teachers and staff 
  • Available on Tuesdays from 3:40-6:10p, from September 9th through May 12th 
  • Available to attend staff orientation on August 26th at 3p 

Compensation

We offer a competitive hourly rate, staff orientation, mentoring, and the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment. This is a part-time, contract teaching position, on an as needed basis and compensation is $40/hour for 2.25-2.5 hours of work. 

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Teachers must be able to travel to B’nai Jeshurun’s location (270 West 89th Street, New York NY 10024). Stooping, bending, and reaching for and carrying files or supplies, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.
