Executive Director, Memphis, TN

Beth Sholom is a warm, dynamic, inclusive, and growing Conservative congregation serving the Jews of Memphis and their families. We provide educational, social, cultural, and religious experiences in our beautiful facility and beyond, to help ensure that Jewish life in Memphis continues to flourish for generations to come. We are a community centered around experiencing Jewish life together through prayer and spirituality, learning Torah, chesed and tzedek, tzedakah, and social gatherings.

We are currently seeking an Executive Director to serve as the Chief Operating Officer for our congregation of 270 families. This individual will work in close collaboration with our clergy, staff, lay leaders, and members, setting a warm and positive tone for all synagogue interactions within and outside the synagogue community.

The Executive Director is responsible for directing the synagogue’s administrative, financial, business, and security operations, as well as overseeing non-professional staff and the operation and maintenance of our physical facility.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management:

  • Manage all aspects of financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, processing payments, and participating in fundraising activities for Beth Sholom Synagogue, Beth Sholom Memorial Gardens, and our various endowment funds
  • Reporting on the state of finances to the synagogue leadership
  • Developing strategies to ensure cost-effectiveness and financial sustainability

Facilities Management

  • Manage operations to ensure the security and safety, maintenance, cleanliness, and timely repair of Synagogue and Cemetery properties
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, helping facilitate efficient and effective programming

Human Resources Management

  • Manage and prepare payroll and benefits
  • Foster a collaborative work environment
  • Maintain and update HR policies

Organizational Leadership

  • Collaborate with staff and lay leaders in development and implementation of programming
  • Facilitate congregational participation through member engagement
  • Partner with the Rabbi and President in determining and reaching strategic goals for the synagogue
  • Supervise day-to-day tasks and activities of the Office Manager

Communications and Logistics

  • Create and manage content for publicity, including newsletters, website, and social media
  • Plan and oversee program logistics

 

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor's degree and 5 years’ experience, or equivalent; MA or MBA a plus
  • Demonstrated management experience
  • Demonstrated financial experience
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication
  • Strong collaborative ability
  • Experience with computer software; experience with Quickbooks and ShulCloud is a strong plus
  • History of facilities management and event-scheduling
  • Public relations, communications, and marketing experience
  • Willingness to work some evenings and weekends
  • Willingness to be present on Shabbat, holidays, and at life cycle events
