With a world-class clergy, a tradition of excellence, and the aspiration of building sustainable Jewish community for the 21st century, Congregation Shaarey Zedek (CSZ) is a leading Conservative synagogue located in Southfield, Michigan. We focus on strengthening deep connections among members, inclusion, and evolving with attention to both tradition and modernity.

We are seeking an experienced Director of Engagement, who can envision how unaffiliated become prospects, prospects become active members, and members become volunteers and leaders. This senior leadership position will partner with our talented clergy, staff, and lay leadership to build the premier Jewish community in Michigan.

The Director of Engagement will report directly to the Executive Director, is a member of the senior management team, and is the leader of the program team. Metrics of success include:
• Participation of prospective members
• Membership recruitment
• Participation of existing members
• Level of volunteerism within the membership
• Satisfaction and positive feedback from members

Responsibilities and Duties
1. Lead communication and marketing of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, so that all vehicles work together to effectively grow engagement. Supervise the work of MARCOM contractors, including:
- Reach out to the unaffiliated through a variety of media to familiarize them with, and invite them to participate in, the Congregation
- Develop concise and targeted communications that drive members to deeper relationship with the Congregation.
2. Focus on recruitment, retention, and participation of members, including:
- Manage a CRM data-based strategic relationship management effort tracking interests, participation, volunteerism, and leadership.
- Cultivate relationships with members, and prospects from target demographic groups, to engage them in the Congregation.
- Utilize relationships maintained by the clergy and other members to increase connectivity and participation.
3. Enable the realization of in-person, online, and hybrid program ideas developed by our members and clergy, including:
- Administer an effective program planning process involving program stakeholders in gathering aspirations, creating implementation teams, and assuring necessary details are addressed and communicated.
- Manage the program calendar to maximize synergy between programs and avoid conflicts.
- Manage the program development and implementation timeline, ensuring appropriate lead time.
- Clearly communicate the vision and plan for each program within the program team.
- Supervise the Program Associate
- Work within established budgets, setting sustainable event fees and seeking sponsorship opportunities.
- Lead volunteer and staff advance and on-site support for programs
4. Cultivate volunteers and leaders within the Congregation, establishing lay/professional teams to design and implement impactful activities.
5. Provide additional assistance to leadership and clergy on an as-needed basis in other ways.

Qualifications and Skills
1. At least five years of experience enabling the development and implementation of innovative and effective programs and events within a collaborative Jewish context, including the recruitment, engagement, and empowerment of volunteers
2. At least three years of experience working within a membership-based organization in a recruitment, retention, or development activity.
3. At least two years of experience directly involved in marketing and communications or development
4. Ability to understand the strategic context of decisions, and to establish detailed plans to realize the desired outcomes.
5. Ability to work independently, reliably achieving goals with minimal management intervention
6. Ability to work a non-conventional and variable weekly schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
7. Demonstrated excellent planning, forethought, organizational and interpersonal skills
8. Strong ability to accomplish tasks and develop plans engaging the participation of organizational leaders
9. Highly competent computer skills: Microsoft Office, Google tools, ability to learn CRM and other systems
10. Understand synagogue rituals and religious observances, and the impact on people’s lives
11. Experience in effective facilitation of philanthropy is a plus.
12. Bachelor's degree required, higher degree preferred
