Congregation Beth El, Berkeley’s progressive Reform Congregation since 1945, seeks our next Operations Manager. This is a full-time operations and management position, working directly with the Executive Director. The position has generous benefits, including working with a fun, welcoming and talented team.

More than 500 households rely on the congregation for worship, community, preschool care, after school education, summer camp and a wide range of additional programming throughout the year. This position is a key member of the staff and often serves as the welcoming face of the clergy of Beth El.


Candidates should have experience managing people in a calm, clear and supportive way, ideally in a membership organization; managing processes used by multiple people; a demonstrated ability to learn new tasks and calmly and effectively manage multiple priorities. Familiarity with Jewish customs, rituals and synagogue life is extremely helpful but not required. You must enjoy managing others, and have excellent computer and communication skills. Experience with Microsoft office suite and Google applications are needed.

Position: Full-Time, Exempt

Job purpose:

To create a warm, welcoming, safe and efficient environment for staff and members by empowering and training your staff, giving clear guidance, managing processes, and coordinating with outsourced services.

Values and shared expectations:
Be a good manager of people; meet regularly, one-on-one, with your staff
Treat others with courtesy and respect at all times; maintain confidentiality
Use clear, written processes and instructions; do not rely on one-off emails to guide staff
Do not perform tasks or take on responsibilities that you can empower your staff to perform or that are the responsibility of other departments.
Effectively manage your time, projects and deadlines and ensure your staff does the same.
Act as a respected, open-minded representative of the congregation, and personify our core values in your professional life.


Some Specific Duties and Responsibilities (a full Job Description is available):
Manage Front Office personnel who provide:
A warm, welcoming and responsive presence for the entire community and staff
Coordination of the production of some communications material
Liaison with outsourced Accounts Payable company
Maintenance and training of all office machines
Google administration
Manage the physical building and its use:
Supervision of facilities staff
Planning and use of the physical building (events, meetings, calendaring, resource management, etc.)
Oversee regular maintenance (cleaning, landscaping, business machines, elevator, electrical repair, alarm/security, plumbing repair; furniture and fixtures)
Audio/Visual system maintenance and training
Liaison with outside IT support firm
In-house caterer management
Other:
Day-of programmatic support of some programs, including some evenings and weekends
Guidance and coordination of the Administrative team
HR administrative support (administrative onboarding/off-boarding of new/terminated staff; time card coordination; business cards)
Physical demands
Lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs.
Working at a computer keyboard
