The Katie and Irwin Kahn Jewish Community Center (JCC) is a friendly, welcoming, and inclusive community center in the Northeast area of Columbia, South Carolina. The mission of the JCC is to enhance the quality of life by providing comprehensive programs based on Jewish values, traditions, heritage, and culture. The JCC aims to promote unity through social, recreational, athletic, educational, and cultural programs, enriching and uniting the Jewish community and the community as a whole.
The JCC hosts a range of programs for people of all backgrounds, ages, and affiliation. Programs and special events for individuals and every family member include fitness, sports and recreational leagues, aquatics, summer camp, Jewish life, adult and senior activities, and community and member events.
The JCC seeks a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who is a superb strategic planner, a visioning leader, with skills in operational and staff management, as well as community building and fundraising. The CEO will lead the JCC to reimagine agency-wide programming beyond the pandemic. This position is currently open and available for the right candidate.
About the Columbia JCC
Since 1955, the Katie and Irwin Kahn JCC has been serving the social, cultural, and recreational needs of the community. The JCC currently has an annual operating budget of $1.6 million. Located on 23 acres, the modern 50,000 ft.² building completed in 2005, houses an exceptional state-of-the-art fitness center, an air-conditioned track, a 25-yard, 4-lane handicapped-accessible heated indoor pool, full-size gymnasium, massage room, men and women's steam and locker rooms, spinning and group fitness room, banquet and meeting rooms, teen lounge, outdoor playground, and lots of beautiful green space.
The JCC is financially sound, with a committed and engaged Board of Directors and a dedicated staff. While the fitness program is robust, the impact of the pandemic has caused a 20% membership decline. There is a tremendous opportunity to grow programs for children, including toddlers, preschoolers, after-school programs, and summer camp.
Some of the current programs and services include:
• Health and Fitness: Personal training, Pickle Ball, Pilates, yoga, Zumba, cycling, and high intensity interval training.
• Aquatic Classes: Senior water fitness, hydro happy hour, swim lessons, tai chi, walking for fitness, swim team, aquatic personal training, and aquatic rehabilitation.
• Jewish Life/Special Events: Drive-in theater, Jewish film festival, and guest speakers.
About the Columbia, South Carolina Jewish Community
The Jewish population in Columbia is 3,000-3,500 individuals, many of whom are unaffiliated. It is home to a reform temple, conservative synagogue, Chabad House, Hillel at the University of South Carolina, Jewish Family Service, Cutler Jewish Day School, The Anne Frank House – U.S. Headquarters, and one kosher restaurant.
Columbia is an established Jewish community with strong intergenerational relationships and welcoming and inviting to individuals and families who are new to the area.

Presents visionary and strategic leadership: The CEO will create and clearly articulate an exciting new vision identifying key strategic opportunities which focus on the JCC’s mission. The CEO will pursue creative and innovative options for underperforming and under-utilized facilities, as well as the campus green space. The CEO will partner with the Jewish Federation and other Jewish and general community organizations, working to support existing collaborative programs and envisioning new ways to engage together. The CEO must see the big picture, managing current issues, while intentionally thinking long term.
Demonstrates Skill in Operational Management: Responsible for day-to-day management of the JCC, the CEO will establish short and long range goals that are strategic, programmatic, fiscally responsible, and align with the JCC’s mission. Knowledge and management skills in plant oversight, marketing, and programming are essential.
Displays Sound Staff Management Skills: The CEO will lead, coach, retain, and attract a high-performance senior management team. The CEO will create a positive culture of productivity, collaboration, and accountability. The CEO will foster an environment where staff feel they can take some risks in aspiring toward excellence in all programming. The CEO will challenge staff to continually improve their lines of business while growing professionally.
Proven Ability in Fundraising and Resource Development: The CEO will have a proven track record of fundraising success, including knowledge of and participation in individual major donor development, planned giving, grant procurement, capital campaigns, corporate sponsorships, and special events. The CEO will build meaningful relationships with existing and new donors, clearly demonstrating confidence in the JCC and its leadership. The CEO will artfully connect every philanthropic pursuit to meet overall agency needs.
Provides Exemplary Executive Leadership: The CEO will lead with empathy, confidence, and trust. The CEO will be relentlessly optimistic in pursuit of the JCCs mission, while balancing aspirational goals with realistic expectations and accountability. The CEO’s sound judgement will permeate through all significant aspects of planning, decision-making, and problem-solving.
Exhibits Financial Acumen: The CEO will develop a realistic budget in partnership with the finance committee and board. Using financial statements to guide and oversee agency performance, the CEO must remain flexible, making changes as necessary which ensure financial stability.
The ideal candidate will have:
• Minimum of bachelor's degree, with 5+ years of proven leadership/management roles in a JCC, similar non-profit agency, or from the business sector. An advanced degree in business, public administration, Jewish communal service, or social work is preferred.
• Ability to develop and drive both short-term and long-term strategy for the organization, which is fiscally responsible and aligned with the JCC’s mission.
• Excellence in organizational management, with the ability to move the agency toward continuous improvement.
• Developing a high-performance team which meets and exceeds planned outcomes.
• Knowledge and understanding of Jewish culture, practices, and tradition.
• Experience with “best-in-class” JCC programming, toddler through senior adults, preferred.
• Proven ability to build strong and lasting relationships and partnerships with Jewish, corporate, government, and other organizations, and engage key stakeholders and audiences of varying sizes and interests.
• Proven results in past fundraising efforts, specifically with major donors.
• Strong analytical skills and ability to understand financial data and make fiscally responsible decisions.
• Dynamic, empathetic, and inspirational leader to serve as the internal and public face of the organization.
• Appreciation and commitment to diversity; works easily with people of all backgrounds and ages.
