For 70+ years, Temple Isaiah has offered Angelinos a place to connect, to study, to celebrate, and to answer the prophetic call to build a more just and compassionate world.
Temple Isaiah’s congregation has continuously referred to itself as the “Temple Isaiah Family” and has, indeed, functioned as a dynamic and caring extended family. Temple Isaiah embraces all the generations of its members’ families while reaching out to the entire community with a rich and wide array of religious, social action, and educational services, as well as programs and celebrations.
Temple Isaiah has 780 family member units, an annual operating budget of approximately $6M and is currently governed by a 31-elected members Board of Trustees (in addition, all Past Presidents are Board Members). Temple Isaiah has 4 clergy, a staff of 96 (including teachers), a K-12 school of 212 students, and a preschool with 225 students. Pre-COVID Temple Isaiah had 950 families, and $8M budget, 400 K-12 students, and 350 preschool students.

About the Role
Temple Isaiah seeks a dynamic, strategic leader with demonstrated success in management and organizational development and leadership. The Temple Isaiah Executive will help clarify, communicate, and advance the mission and vision, serving as a partner and liaison with the Senior Rabbi and the President of Isaiah. This individual will manage and oversee the daily operations and will cultivate strong, thriving relationships with congregants, staff, board members, community partners, and other external stakeholders. The Executive will be a strong presence and affect positive change for the congregation.
The Executive will be responsible for the management and supervision of Temple Isaiah's staff as well as the day-to-day operations and financial framework. They will work in partnership with the Senior Rabbi to grow and retain members and foster a feeling of community and belonging among congregants. In addition, the Executive, working with the Temple President is jointly responsible for the support and management of the Temple’s volunteers and lay leadership.
Provide short-term and long-term operational and managerial leadership, partnering with the Senior Rabbi and the President of Isaiah.
Re-engineer temple processes and systems (in Membership, Facilities, HR, Financial, Schools, Development, Technology and more) to better serve the temple’s needs and mission.
Lead and manage the staff; break down operating silos to improve cohesion, creativity, operations, and relational performance.
Understand the current financial operating model in order to build a more sustainable system that reflects the temple’s mission to be “your home at the intersection of tradition and innovation”.
About Your Impact
Strategic Leadership and Executive Management
Partner with the Senior Rabbi, the President of Isaiah and other professional staff to identify goals and strategies that align the synagogue in areas for mission-driven growth, opportunity and sustainability.
Continually assess the congregation’s needs and recommend priorities and necessary changes to strengthen the organization accordingly.
Be involved and working with Temple Senior Staff to manage every aspect of the synagogue’s operations.
Foster a culture with the staff that promotes teamwork, respect, dignity, and compassion for employees and volunteers and all those served by the organization.
Work with the Temple’s Treasurer, future temple accounting resource and the Budget Committee to prepare the proposed annual budget and monitor implementation of approved budget during the course of the year.
Monitor Temple Isaiah finances to ensure the adequacy and integrity of the financial operations and compliance to proper financial procedures across the agency.
Monitor the Temple’s cash flows and prepare appropriate analysis from in-house reporting for the Senior Rabbi and Treasurer. Support information needed for the Board and the congregation.
Develop policies and procedures that contain costs and seek efficiency improvements in temple operations.
Administration and Technology Management
Assess and oversee administration of information systems and technology, including phone system, computer hardware, software, database and office equipment.
Oversee the development and production of all communication and marketing materials, ensuring consistent messaging, accuracy, and timing, including production of the weekly newsletter and promotion for community events.
Supervise and partner with the Accounting Resource to design and support Salesforce CRM.
Educational Leadership Development
Manage and supervise temple’s educational leadership team led by the Senior Director of Early Childhood Education and Engagement and Senior Director of K-12 Education and Engagement to support/ensure success of programmatic and educational goals of the schools and programs. Assess the resources, systems and processes.
Partner with the Senior Rabbi, who supervises clergy, to support/ensure success of programmatic and ritual goals. Senior Rabbi will also supervise the Preschool and K-12 Directors related to all ritual and pedagogy-related programs and activities.
Lay Leadership Development
Work with the President of Isaiah and Executive Committee to ensure the Board is properly supported with information and data as needed.
Fund and Resource Development
Provide support for all development activities to achieve the congregation’s philanthropy goals in conjunction with the Senior Rabbi, Board of Trustees and Development Committee.
Support all philanthropy and development activities including annual campaigns, major gifts, planned giving, endowment, and other fundraising opportunities.
Ensure appropriate cultivation, acknowledgment and recognition processes are in place.
Supervise and manage the Director of Management Engagement to set the tone for the relationships among congregants, staff and clergy and to support/ensure success of programmatic, retention and recruitment goals. Work with Director to manage the pricing structure for membership including all fees and tiered levels.
Foster an inclusive environment aligned with the vision of community established by the clergy.
Human Resources Management
Supervise the Director of People and Culture in order to oversee HR management for Temple Isaiah employees, including professional development, performance reviews and performance management.
Review and evaluate the organizational structure and processes
Create an environment of respect, employee satisfaction, productivity, and high overall morale among the staff and clergy.
Ensure that staff provides a very high level of customer service to congregants and the greater community.
Supervise and manage the Director of Facilities to ensure that physical plant remains in good condition and repair.
Partner with the Director in managing the building staff, maintaining the operations and appearance of building, grounds, property and equipment (including technology, sound systems and live streaming).
Partner with the President and the Board’s Safety and Security Committee to ensure the safety and security of the Temple community and Temple property.

You have a strong background in complex organizations—operations, finance, HR and facility, and you love every piece of that puzzle. You care about getting things done but how they are done is equally important.
You are a strong and compassionate leader and you know people. You have managed and supervised staff teams and volunteers who have many years of experience and some who have little experience. You know how to communicate to each member in a warm, positive, and thoughtful way.
You care about tradition and innovation. You’ll sit and learn the history, build relationships with the staff and the lay leaders and then work together to build initiatives, programs, and processes off of the strong foundation Temple Isaiah has.
