General Studies Principal

As one of the educational leaders in a growing private Torah day school in Portland, Oregon, (100 students) the General Studies principal will be instrumental in developing our vision for a place of learning that recognizes the value of each child and cultivates the exciting journey of learning.

Job Description:
We seek an accomplished and thoughtful educator to lead our general studies department by working collaboratively with our staff to oversee student learning, instruction, curriculum, student assessment, and professional development / coaching teachers for the general studies portion of our program. This position reports to the Head of School.

The successful candidate will have:
• Education: Master’s in Elementary Education or Related Education Field
• Strong knowledge of instructional principles and practices
• Minimum 5 years’ elementary teaching experience

• Candidates with 3 years’ experience as an elementary assistant principal or administrative position in curriculum development will be given priority
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for parent/ administration relationships
• Candidate must have strong computer skills, Microsoft Office, Learning Aps and Google Apps for Education
• Candidate should be a role model for students, both in and out of school
• Comfort working in a traditional environment and respectful of religious values. Applicant does not need to be familiar with Judaism to meet the requirements for this position.

Essential Responsibilities Include:
Oversee and implement the General Studies program of instruction and age appropriate learning activities that adheres to Maayan’s philosophy, goals and objectives.
Be a positive and warm leader to cultivate an effective and nurturing learning environment
Collaborate with the Head of School to develop the school’s educational vision for students, staff, parents, and community members.
Collaborate with Board of Directors as requested, to assist with implementing the mission of the school
Curriculum Development: Formulate and execute a purposeful and quality program of study designed to meet individual student needs. Help create and oversee implementation of curriculum that meet national and state standards for education.
Create and maintain a school environment conducive to learning; encourage student enthusiasm for the learning process, use verbal positive recognition to nurture students, and consistent procedures for a well organized school.
Plan and oversee an Assessment Plan for the school that evaluates progress of students on a regular basis using multiple methods of assessment. Lead appropriate adjustments to the instructional program based on assessment results. Use assessments to strategically guide teachers to support individual student learning.
Professional Development: oversee professional development of staff, specifically concentrating of General Studies. Provide staff/administration guidance as needed for facilitating quality classroom environment, collaborative learning instruction, and a learner-centered approach. Mentor teachers to support teacher development with regular meetings.
Communication: Assess students and report findings via parent conferences, and other forms of verbal and written communication. Develop and maintain communication with staff and parents about education and activities at school.
Coordinate team meetings of parent/teacher/admin meetings to support students with individual needs
Create education initiatives and special school programming to build school spirit and showcase learning to parents
Lead the school in our accreditation review

Physical Requirement: This position requires the ability to sit for medium periods of computer work. It requires the ability to visually see a computer screen for extended time and type on a keyboard. The position requires the ability to walk around campus.
