Director of Development

Reports to Senior Rabbi and the CAA Board President

The Director of Development is responsible for leading short, medium and long-term efforts to increase fundraising, philanthropy, grants, and legacy giving for the Congregation Agudas Achim community — and cultivating and nurturing the valuable relationships needed to do so.

The Director builds awareness of the role of the congregation in community life and models respect for donors. The Director’s role is critical to the financial sustainability of Congregation Agudas Achim; the Director is entrusted with confidential financial information of CAA and its members. This position is a new one, developed to implement a formal strategic goal and to promote a culture of full-hearted financial support among all congregants and supporters.

The Director coordinates closely with the Senior Rabbi and Associate Rabbi, Board President, Aytz Chaim Board Chair, Fundraising and Financial Development Vice Presidents, Board of Directors, and Director of Operations.

The Director of Development is a full-time position. Hours may include weekend and evening hours and are often focused on Jewish holidays and scheduled community events.

Primary duties Include:

Plan and lead all actions necessary to increase the number of people who contribute regularly to the finances of the organization through donations and gifts

Provide oversight of the Strategic Plan goal of enlarging CAA’s endowments (including Aytz Chaim) benefitting the General Fund

Function as the staff “point person” in support of volunteer leaders of the Financial Resources Development Committee and Fundraising Committee

Build ongoing relationships with and a knowledge base of congregants, their philanthropic intentions, their capacity and history of giving
Provide oversight of systems that support prompt prospect follow-up, stewardship, and appropriate donor recognition

Coordinate with lay leadership to identify and solicit prospects

Create and plan fundraising events and campaigns with staff, lay leaders, and volunteers.

Additional duties include:

Maintain a central fundraising calendar, coordinated with Aytz Chaim, Brotherhood, Sisterhood and all other organizations and departments that raise funds under CAA’s Federal Taxpayer Identification Number

For all of the above organizations, and for events, coordinate “asks” for major sponsorships

Investigate philanthropic grants that may be available and make timely application for them

Launch a planned giving program

Represent CAA and network with community and campus partners

Provide updates to lay leadership and staff

Working in partnership with the Director of Operations, coordinate support from communications and other office staffers

Acquire additional training to continue professional growth

Other duties essential to building full participation in fundraising and donations

The Director of Development will oversee efforts to raise endowments for the congregation, including Aytz Chaim; manage campaigns, events and special projects; and identify new fundraising opportunities and philanthropic grants. They will ensure that all fundraising initiatives are properly organized, coordinated with one another, and provided with adequate resources and support.

The Director will oversee stewardship and acknowledgment processes so that all donors have an immediate and appropriate sense of appreciation.


They will develop and maintain standard operating procedures and best practices for the Fundraising Vice President, fundraising committee, financial resource development committee and staff members, and develop operational plans for long and midterm endowment campaigns while coordinating with the Fundraising VP on annual fundraising efforts.

The Director will work closely with the Senior Rabbi to identify and cultivate donor opportunities and report quarterly to the Board of Directors, Financial Resource Development, Fundraising, and Finance Committees the status of all fundraising efforts included in the annual budget.

The Director will also nurture engagement with “Ten4Ten” donors and Kol HaKavod members -- and develop additional giving categories, as appropriate. They will annually prepare a confidential list of potential new donors plus endowment expansion candidates.

Office staff who report to the Director of Operations will be available to support the Director of Development for specific and defined duties such as organizing events and volunteers, and developing promotional materials.

As part of CAA’s broader marketing strategy, the Director will coordinate with volunteers, staff, and outside resources to implement a development-oriented public relations campaign. They will develop and execute materials including campaign-related communications, and financial materials for use in campaigns, consistent with CAA branding guidelines.

Performance will be assessed annually based on meeting the primary and additional duties.

Skills required:

Three to five years professional or lay leadership experience in nonprofit fundraising, ideally within a Jewish communal organization

Ability to manage staff members on specific projects and assignments and collaborate with staff members’ direct supervisors

Knowledge or ability to learn account management software, such as Shulcloud

Strong organizational skills

Flexible and adaptable. Always professional.


Working knowledge of Zoom, Constant Contact, Microsoft products and G-Suite

Expertise in fundraising proposals design, planning, writing and budgeting

Strong written and verbal skills

Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks and demonstrate, flexibility and a willingness to shift easily between various responsibilities

Conduct work with respect, tact, sensitivity, creativity, and collegiality.
