About the Position
We are currently in search of a full time Development Director to further the mission and goals of the Synagogue through a comprehensive fundraising program that will grow and expand upon the initiatives currently in place. The candidate should be self-motivated, have a 4-year degree, prior relevant experience, familiarity with computer fundraising software (Shul Cloud preferred), ideally have prior grant-writing experience and superior written and oral communication skills. The candidate will work closely with Synagogue leadership, senior staff and the Brotherhood community.

Job Description
The Development Director leads in designing and managing a comprehensive fund-raising program for the Brotherhood Synagogue, including the Annual fund, major and planned gifts, foundation grants, and targeted fund raising.

Fund Raising Responsibilities

• Design and execute a strategic, overall annual development plan that includes: Annual Fund, Endowed Funds, Planned Giving and individual program funds.
• Oversee policy and procedure for all fund-raising efforts throughout the Synagogue, including those specific to the Development office as well as Schools’ Benefit, Annual Barbeque, Homeless Shelter, programs and classes.
• Locate potential grant sources and supervise the preparation of grant proposals.
• Identify and research prospective major donors from existing donor base, community, foundations, Nursery School, Hebrew School, Toddler program and Tikvah program.
• Develop and implement strategies for building relationships leading to solicitations.
• Prepare comprehensive yearly fund-raising timeline.
• Cultivate, solicit, and steward donors.
• Conduct prospect research via wealth screening software, Foundation Center and other tools.
• Ensure appropriate recording, reporting, and acknowledgment of Annual Fund and all other gifts. Notify those to whom tribute gifts have been made.
• Draft correspondence and acknowledgments.
• Follow up on all pledges.
• Organize events as appropriate to meet fundraising goals.
• Attend, report and take minutes at monthly Board of Trustees Meeting.
• Work with the Development Committee and Development chair to establish fundraising protocol and strategies.
• Work with the Budget Committee to set dollar goals for fundraising.

Administrative Responsibilities
• Write and coordinate all Development materials including but not exclusively limited to: annual fund appeal, monthly newsletter article, case statements, web content.
• Work with the Rabbi, Cantor, Executive Director, President of the Board of Trustees and members of the Development Committee to identify and cultivate potential donors and fund sources.
• Serve as a liaison to keep the Rabbi, Nursery School, Hebrew School, and Board of Trustees informed of fund-raising activities.
• Meet with the various Board Committees, i.e., House, Security, Special Events, Adult Education, Israel Affairs, Social Action, and Interfaith as well as with the Synagogue Controller to determine funding needs and report to Board Committee Chairs on gifts raised for their programs.
• Prepare reports and analyze fundraising results, including monthly report to Board.
• Supervise development interns. (as needed)

• Holds a four-year degree OR has equivalent work experience
• Prior relevant experience
• Development experience with religious institutions is preferred, but not required
• Knowledge of New York philanthropic community, Jewish philanthropy a plus
• Familiarity with computer systems and various software packages including word processing. Familiarity with Shul Cloud a plus
• Superior written and oral communication skills
• Ability to multitask and work under multiple deadlines
